How far in advance can I renew my CHL? Can anybody recommend an instructor in the south central Texas region? The place I got certified through originally went out of business. What is the process to renew? Is it the same as getting it the 1st time or is it streamlined any?

The renewal process is pretty simple. You'll take another class, four hours this time, to cover changes to the law, and you'll have to requalify on the range.

You should get a letter from DPS about 6 months before your CHL expires. I got my letter a few weeks ago. I called and asked them to send me a renewal packet in the mail. They said it should arrive in 7-10 days.

Is the renewal packet as in depth? Fingerprints (like they have changed??!!) new notarized stuff? I'm just trying to get an idea how much of a hassel it is going to be. The first time was a little tedious.

Thanks

This will be my third renewal. I had to do classroom, range, fingerprints, photos, notary, etc every time.

Do it at least 6 weeks out...

from your license expiring......I took my class the first week in Feb and it took 6 weeks to get my new license. I had to go nekkid for a week.......chris3

Man, this will be my 4th time taking the class in 2007. I am tired of taking the classroom time over and over.

I renewed in January

Ball3006 gave good advice about renewing early enough. Also be aware to fill out all paperwork correctly. I "checked" where it said to "initial" and it took DPS three weeks to send the paperwork back to be corrected. I'm still waiting for my renewed license.

In the San Antonio area I recommend Chris Bird at Privateer Publications (210) 308-8191 or you can look in the SA Depress Blues classified under guns. I took my initial and renewal courses under Chris. He makes arrangements for fingerprinting and notarizing as part of the course.

In the San Antonio area, I highly recommend renewing at The Bullet Hole http://www.bullethole.com/ I know the owners well, and they are very good, very pro-gun people.

It is a full-fledged range, and once you're done re-qualifying, go rent a machine gun and have some REAL fun.

Welcome to THR.

Regarding your statement "A Jew without a gun is a Jew without a memory" - I have an elephant-like memory.

My license expires next year too....

time sure flys when it cost you big bucks.......I will be a blue hair then so the cost will drop by one half and the license is good for a few extra years......chris3
