Anyone in Northern NJ with a bunch of 9mm who wouldn't mind helping me out? I would like to shoot as many full size, all steel 9mm pistols as I can before I buy, but the only one's my friends have is the glock 19. Is there anywhere in Northern NJ or across PA border where I can rent a couple different ones?

Or, anyone out there who is near me who wouldn't mind meeting at the range to give it a go?

Thanks!

understand NJ has some tough gun laws.. what are ranges there like? can you own guns say for competition or is the law more than just for CCW..?

You failed to mention if you have a NJ Firearms ID card. How does the 'loaner' know if you are a felon or not? The 'loaner' is placed at risk (physical and legal) by handing a firearm over to a stranger.

I would contact ranges or gunshops in PA.

Yes

Of course I have FID...I already have a couple of revolvers.

I will try calling the places on the list. Good idea.

Thanks.

drop me an email. I maybe able to help you out if all my friends get on the same page

I know of no places that rent in NNJ.

Speaking of Jersey law, there is an issue with the "temporary transfer" of a firearm, which is illegal except if you are in the bush hunting or a member of a range. So, technically, if you "try" one of your friend's pistols, he is in violation of this stupid law. By handing a pistol to another to try-out, you are performing a "temporary transfer". Nice, huh? Never heard of it being enforced, but its there. Look it up.

I know that the cherry ridge range has to provide a member list to the State Police of people who want to "temporarily transfer" a weapon. This is optional, but if you dont check the box on the application to be a member, then you are not shielded from this stupid law. :banghead:

There are ranges that rent in NJ. Hogue's down in West Deptford's got a wide selection. IIRC, there's a segment hidden in the statutes that allow for this.

Fair enough. Here are some more suggestions.

1. Join a NJ gun club and let it be known that you want to try out somebody's steel 9mm.
2. PA is probably more 'temporary transfer' friendly.
3. There is a range in PA near the DWG, just off of I-80. They rent a lot of firearms ...... including machineguns.
4. The gunwriter Rauch uses a range in Doylestown, PA. I was there once and I seem to recall that they rent. They also had a few machineguns for sale.
5. Another range in PA just south of Philly in a big old warehouse. Can't remember which town.

You can only "temporary transfer" a handgun in NJ if it occurs at a range that has filed its charter with the State Police. Meaning, if you are temporarily transferring guns the State Police have you on a special list.

Hanguns are banned in NJ regardless of whether or not you have the FID. The only exemptions are to and from the range, home, or at the range. No exceptions. All transfer of any handguns will be banned outright as soon as the 'smart gun' comes out, which will probably be much more expensive than a conventional handgun and can only be reloaded at the factory, so forget target shooting.

Don't bother applying for CCW in NJ.

Raven's post is much clearer than mine - but that's what I was trying to get across regarding "trying someone's gun".

Unreal.

Good luck, and like others have said, you'll likely find greener pastures in PA.

Based on the way the posts are coming in, I am scared to let you try my
gun(s).

I live in Bucks County PA, I shoot at Target World in Chalfont PA and Classic Pistol in Southampton PA. I have used the range at Targetmaster in Chadds Ford PA, but that is down near the Delaware border. Targetmaster has excellent gun training and safety courses; I took the Basic Handgun Safety course there about three years ago. All of these are public ranges that have a good selection of gun rentals, and I have rented guns from all three places. I did a lot of renting & borrowing before I actually started buying guns.

There are a few decent indoor pistol ranges in Philly, but I haven't been to these places in a while.

Since I cannot legally carry my guns into N.J., I don't worry about shooting in N.J. I do know that there is a shooting range run by the N.J. State Police somewhere down near Atlantic City, that is open to N.J. residents, but they have no rentals.

Sorry off topic, but with all the experts here (I've never heard of that gun lending law, yikes!), if I have all my paperwork in order (FID, a pistol permit), as a NJ resident, can I buy a handgun in PA?

My impression is that I can buy one, but I can't take it home with me... I have to ask them to ship it to a FFL with in NJ. Is this accurate?

Or over internet?

How about CDNN or other online stuff? What is the process in NJ (once you have your paperwork) to get a gun shipped to your local FFL and make it happen. Also, is there a list of FFL in NJ?

Thanks!

Shrinkmd, I've done the internet sale thing through GunBroker (there's a FFL search engine in their "For Buyers" FAQ), which should pretty much be the same as any internet sale. After your purchase is confirmed by the seller, you pick a local FFL and ask them to mail/fax a copy of their FFL to the seller. The seller will ship the item to the FFL, after which it's just like a normal gun sale plus transfer fee (bring your FID, a drivers license or other picture ID, and payment).

You can talk to your FFL about getting the same gun from their wholesellers/distributors directly too and sometimes they can undercut the auction/internet price.

That's essentially correct. You'll then have to showup @ your NJ FFL with your pistol purchase permit, etc, ad nauseum.

1) You'll need to find an NJ FFL who's willing to to transfers. Most of them would rather sell you a gun out of their own inventory

2) You'll have to find a PA FFL that'll work with you. When I lived in NJ, I never had a problem getting a PA FFL to sell me a Jersey Legal long gun, but the minute you mention "handgun", and "NJ resident", their eyes glaze over, and it's pretty clear they'd rather you go elsewhere, like NJ, for that sort of thing.

I live in Warren Cty (Washington Twp), and go to the Sunset Hill Range in PA.

It has a decent collection of 9mm handguns, and is a pretty fun place to shoot. Overall, its somewhat expensive if you are looking to make it a common thing, but if it is just shooting a few weapons, its perfect.

BTW: Try the forums, the gun list is slightly out dated.

I have a Beretta 92F, a Sig P226, a WWII Luger and Browning Hi-Power your welcome to try if your willing to come down to Jackson. I shoot every Sunday at Central Jersey Rifle & Pistol Club. :D
