I make a trip out to NJ once a year to visit friends. I pass through KY, WV, MD, PA and NJ.

My KY CCW doesn't cover NJ and MD obviously, but is there *some* way at all I can leave my 9mm locked in a case, unloaded in the trunk? Would the FOPA 'safe passage' clause apply?

FOPA wil cover you in the states that you pass throughbut not in NJ, your destination state. In NJ you will have to comply with their laws.

Leave it at home. There's no way for you to legally possess a handgun while visiting friends in NJ.

Alland is right... just leave your gun at home. It's not worth the penalties...

Yeah, just leave it at home. Any exemptions in the NJ firearms laws are up for interpretation at the whim of the police, prosecutors and judges on an individual basis. Basically you could follow the letter of the law and still get thrown in the big house. It just happened recently.

Wonder why it is that the states with the worst crime rates also have the most restrictive gun laws. Hmmm. I go to Camden NJ 2-3 times each year and if there was ever a city where you need multiple guns, Camden is the place.

Yeah. I was in Baltimore this summer with my wife and daughter for a National History Day competition at the UofMaryland so of course I had no ccw with me. We were going to a wallyworld and sitting at a traffic light when an altercation took place about 100 feet in front of us. 7-8 guys were jawing when a fight broke out in a Mcdonalds parking lot and spilled into the street. As we sat there with our jaws dropped one of the guys pulled out a pistol and started hitting his opponent with it! As far as I could tell he never attempted to actually pull the trigger. Within one minute of the fight starting there were literally 12-15 police cars around so the fight must have started inside the restaurant and they called the cops. There were thugs running every direction and cops caught every one that we saw. I have never wished for my ccw more than in that 2 minute period with my wife and child sitting there watching this. Had I needed one my only weapon was a rental car at that point.
