Can anyone point me to a tutorial or direct me in how to change the recoil springs in an XD service model (the captured double-spring assembly)? I can't find anything anywhere about how to get it apart.

why do you want to take it apart? you do mean the factory one that comes in the gun right? do you want to clean it? there is no real need too, and if it is that bad it is probally time to replace it anyway. the factory recoil spring is not something that is meant to be taken apart.

they are like all recoil springs they are good for about 3,000rds and then it is time to replace them. My xd has over 17,000rds and i have been running a don's guide rod with wolff recoil spring since 3,000rds with no complaints. they are inexpensive they work, and you don't have to worry about going through the hassel of getting a factory one.

I was assuming you could reuse the guide rod assembly and just replace the two springs. Do you have to replace the whole thing every 3000 rds?

Yes, you have to replace the whole assembly. That said, you should be fine at 3K. I wouldn't really look at changing mine until 5K, or if you notice symptoms sooner.
