I just bought a Remington 1100 receiver together with bolt, trigger assembly and piston for $75. It just so happens I have a spare barrel and choate stock and forend togther with a few other bits I got with an 1100 which I traded in for an 870 many moons ago. Anyhow I figured I could put together a complete gun for under $100 but here is the catch. The magazine tube is completely mashed up, ie damaged and unrepairable. Now I have replaced a few mag tubes in the past ( on a SPAS 12 and Mossberg 500) but that was a simple heat the receiver with a hair dryer and remove tube with a strap wrench!!!

Close examination reveals that the tube on the 1100 is apparently brazed/soldered/welded into place and not threaded.

My questions are :
1. How do I remove the existing tube without damaging the receiver?
2. How do I reinstall the replacement tube i have ordered from Brownells? and most importantly....
3. Is it worth the effort????

Thanks in advance for any assistance you may care to offer.

I'd strongly suggest letting a gunsmith handle the installation. If you don't get it right, you'll have ammo feeding problems out the wazoo, which is Not A Good Thing...

It's a factory or factory-authorized repair center job, not a DIY. Same as with an 870, that's why all us oldpharts are always lecturing youngsters about the necessity of putting clamps on their hang-way-out-there magazine extensions. Magazine tube replacement is about the only downside to the 870/1100/11-87 design series (the 878 and 11-48 too but who's counting).

Good luck with it,

At the risk of being redundant, I 3rd or 4th this.

Thanks guys for your input. My gunsmith has now quoted me £68 (about $110) to remove and install a new tube. He to says its a tricky job and has factored on about 3 hours labour for the job. While I'm at it it he has quoted £75 to refinish the entire gun in electroless nickel. I'll let him handle the job. My limited skills do not extend to precision welding/ brazing!!
