I have had a few AKs in the past, but didn't have much respect for them. They invariably looked and felt like slapped together pieces of junk, with no apparent pride in workmanship, even if super reliable. Accuracy was always a complaint of mine, as well. I've been an advocate, instead, of the ARs for a long time. Recently, however, I bought a Bulgarian AK variant that I am very impressed with. It is marketed under the brand name Armory, and the model I have is called SSR-85. It is not only solidly and competently put together, but shows a lot of refinement that I've not seen on imported AKs in a long time. Not only completely reliable, but more than acceptably accurate to boot, which is saying a lot for an AK. From a field sitting off-hand position I had no trouble putting every round I fired into a fist sized hole at 100 yards. This is a great improvement over any AK variant import that I've tried in the past. I am sold on this AK variant. The Bulgarians are putting together a carbine of very high quality here. They might be the best of the imported AKs right now.

i've always wondered, is there any kind of peep sight that isnt a pain to install? Other than the type that replaces the stock rear blade...

Someone makes an excellent M1 Garand style peep sight for the SKS that mounts solidly on the back of the receiver. Seems like it would be easy to make minor alterations in design to make one for the AK.

Such a rear mounted sight would actually be quite a hassle. There is no take down pin in which to anchor the rear sight as there is for the SKS. A sight mounted on the dust cover itself would have trouble with the zero shifting when the cover is taken on and off. That road has been taken before, unfortunately and it did not work out. The optics side rail is the best solution, IMO, for the AK's sight woes.

fair enough, guess I could just learn to use the stock sights, instead of 'fixing' what isnt broken...

Krebs Custom make a rear-mounted sight for their AK's, as illustrated here:

Rear and front shights for AK

I was woundering if any of you AK fans have experince using the Kebscustom rear peep sight with a tritium front replacement sight they make for the ak?

Thanks Double O

this is kind of a fun trip back down memory lane...

I had a all synthetic black, Bulgarian AK stashed between the armor and the back seat of my hummer in OIF 2, my relationship to it started as a brand new out of the crate, "drop weapon" and ended up being used as a primary rifle for my driver, while rolling down the road, I used it to clear a few houses, liked it a little better than my M16, but the command didn't...

with quality ammo and a bunch of LAW, it never jammed. It would devour 75 round drum mags, think we shot about 750 rounds through it on full auto, trying to get something to break, it just kept spitting lead out one end and brass out the side

I've been looking at an ArmoryUSA AK myself. Its an ssr-85-2. Pretty nice as far as I can tell(as stamped AK's go). Its marked on the receiver "Made in Bulgaria". I thought the receivers were all U.S. made and the import parts then attached, with the requisite number of U.S. made parts to make the gun legal(cool if it is truly an original Bulgarian) The pistol grip is marked U.S. made. The shop has it marked $545.00 and I might take them up on it.

Broken? Ehh, not really. But the AK sights do suck by just about anybody's standards. The Mojos help, but are still limited in what they can do with the AK's short sight radius. I have no personal experience with the Krebs. Some people on here do and I distinctly remember one range report not too long ago where a Krebs owner was complaining of his iron sight zero drifting. When you pay $1000 for a rifle, I'd expect all aspects of it to be flawless--esp for an AK.

The question must still be asked, why deal with AK iron sights when you can have this:

Yes, the PK- AS is the dot of choice. I have noted the rear sight on my saiga is way better than the vepr sight. It hsa a wide enough groove to let lifgt in around the edges and is way easier to pick up. The fine little slot of the vepr is to narrow. Time for a file.

The rear dust cover mounted sight, is very well done, and rock solid on the Krebs Custom AK. The front of the dust cover locks into where the old rear sight used to be. I have personal experience with this particular rifle pictured earlier. Very well made and thought out modifications in my opinion. Marc is a good guy to deal with.

Subject: Rear sight dust cover

Do you sell (or plan to sell) the rear dust cover with sight, as installed on your KTR-03S rifle?
No, because the rear sight used on our KTR rifles won't work with a standard AK front sight.
However, we are working on a rear sight that will give the purchaser the same net effect, but one that will work with a standard AK front sight, and not require as much gunsmithing to install. We expect to be able to offer this towards the end of the year.
Thank you for your interest in Krebs Custom.

I've got Krebs sights on one of my Veprs. They work great. Do a search under my name and Krebs and you can read the review. If your dustcover is snug, then there is no zero shift.

Tromix is doing a converstion where he mounts an HK diopter rear sight on an AK dustcover. Also very nice.

had and awesome collection, and when it came time to register.. I sold my bushie dissapator, armalite ar10, a few other toys, and just could not part with my first love (mac90) and her uptown sister Bulgie SLR95. I moved them out of state to keep legal and unreg'd, but just could not sell as i love those two so much... it was easy to part with the others mind you...

should have maybe reged so i could be enjoying them now, but time will tell if this was the right move or not (lame ass CA laws)

the bulgarian build is simply beautiful imo
