I've received word that Carlyle Hebert, known here and on the The Firing Line as Southla1, passed away at 4:35 p.m. today.

Please take a moment to send a sympathy card to the family. If you wish, put your condolences here -- I'll send a link to the family in a couple of days.

Unfortunately, I don't know that much about his family, other than his wife's name is, I believe, Karlyne.

The family address is:

The Heberts
20504 Hwy. 182 W.
Jeanerette, Louisiana 70544

I am truly saddened by that news.

Carlyle was someone who you liked immediately even if we only knew him through the words he wrote on our screens. His advice was always sound and his humor and good nature came through loud and clear.

We are diminished by his untimely passing. My condolences to his wife and family.

Just heard from Karlyne...

If anyone is in the Jeanerette, Louisiana, area, the public viewing will be on Monday (tomorrow) at 2:00 p.m., and the funeral on Tuesday at 11:00 a.m., I believe at the following location:

David Funeral Home
400 Provost Street
Jeanerette, LA 70544

If you can show, call the above funeral home at 337-276-5151
to make sure that this is the correct one!

His final post...

The shuttle breakup...
The Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo's used an ablative heat shield. In other words it got white hot and sloughed off carrying the heat with it. This had a lot to do with the radio blackouts. The shuttle uses the tiles which do not slough off but rather act as insulators. That way all they have is the ionization problem with the radios. It's still there, but not as bad.

They are all #1 in my book and my heart and prayer go out for them and their families.

I can still remember a cold Feb day in 1962. The principal had a TV set up in the auditorium so the whole HS (my senior year) could watch the launch. I fought my way to the front row. After he had achieved orbit everyone had gone back to their classes.......except me and a friend. We sneaked in to the balcony of the auditorium and watched all day till splashdown.

God ride with them.

God ride with you, Carlyle. :(

I've missed him since he took ill...

Now I gotta go back and read his PM's from TFL and THR. :(

Carlyle,

"May you have food and raiment,
A soft pillow for your head,
May you be forty years in heaven
Before the devil knows you're dead."

Rest in peace, old friend.

Breaks my heart. He fought so hard. I thought he was going to make it. His family were fighters also. What a shame for us who are left. The world is an emptier place. Quantrill

This is so sad. I know it is cliche' but he is in a better place with no worries, pain, suffering and most likely happier then any of us.

My prayers go out to his loved ones and a little prayer to hopefully grease the wheels as the gates of heaven.

Chris

RIP.

It was his TFL posts on the M1(s) he'd recently gotten from CMP that got me motivated to get mine.
