I reload so only use factory ammunition for function check in stock 9mm handguns. Otherwise, I'll use my reloads or SD ammo.

I have some leftover FM ammo from 2-3 years back before I started reloading. Some is XTP junk that I won't shoot (burned primers). The rest is FMJ which I had been using up very slowly. But, I had a squib yesterday in my HK so further use of this ammo is absolutely out of the question. I'll pull the ammo apart and I could just throw everything out; I'll certainly discard the bullets and powder. Now the primed cases aren't worth much to me, but I hate to throw out live primers if I don't have to. How would others feel about reusing the primed cases?

What I have read suggests that primers are sealed, and are last a very long time. However, if you are going to use these rounds for anything other than plinking, considering the price of primers, how much is a little peace of mind worth?

I would approach i as: Anything I can safely reuse I would keep, these include Cases, Bullets, Powder, and Primers. It sounds as if there is a safety concern with your Primers, if so, I would discard, Powder could be weighed to determine the existing charge, it could be difficult to determine the powder name. Brass and Bullets can usually be salvaged and reused for plinkers. Just my $0.02

Good Luck
Dan

"...burned primers..." A what?
An XTP is a Hornady jacketed hollow point bullet. Not ammo.
A squib is usually about there being no powder. Nothing to do with the primers. Might be the HK. If the primer goes BANG! with no bullet there's nothing wrong with them. Cases get loaded to the point of needing just powder and bullet all the time with no fuss.
Any primed case is reusable. Any cartridge you disassemble is too. However, if you're frightened, you can safely remove the primers using your press. Just deprime slowly and gently. No big deal.

I didn't under stand the "burned primers" statement either. Maybe rdtompki can clarify what he means by that.

Would I use the primed cases? Sure I would. Not for max loads, but using them for plinkers would be fine..

I would keep and reuse the xtp projectiles, I have always found the xtp reloading bullet to shoot really well for me especially reusing them for plinkers

I'd disassemble the ammo. I purchased 1000 primed nickel 9mm cases recently thinking it would speed up my reloading process. It didn't, as about 25% of them were not sized right and I ended up having to pull down 100 rounds of 9mm that I loaded before I caught the problem. My sizing die fixed them all up.

Pull the bullets, sump the powder if you don't know what it is and load the primed cases. Lower the load and work up to what is comfortable. As Walkalong said, make some plinkers. This sort of rounds work great for destroying tin cans.

I'm confused.
What's a "burned primer"?

I know what reloads are and I assume "SD ammo" means self defense ammunition?

But if the "SD ammo" isn't handloads and it's not factory, what is it?

I can't see any problem with reusing the primed cases for mid level plinking loads.

I cannot fathom why you would "certainly discard the bullets..." just because you had a missing or short powder charge in the ammunition you pulled them from. :scrutiny:

I do agree that you should toss the powder.

If you think XTP bullets are junk, then to you they are junk, regardless of others’ opinions. You can send them to me and I will see that they are properly disposed of. No need to thank me.

As for the primed FM cases, I would reuse them for one time plinkers unless they are the ones that FM used to use that had an internal step. In that case, I would deprime them, if there are enough to make it worthwhile, and deep 6 the cases. Or maybe someone else here would dispose of them for you for a nominal fee.

How many rounds are we talking about and what is a “burned primer” if not a spent one?

My question is why relegate the primed brass to "plinking" ammo? "A" squib to me means one, but is it one per magazine full? Or one in one hundred? Or is it the only one you have experienced with any FM ammo? It's your ammo, your guns, and your specifications/needs, so if you are in doubt, just toss them, whole...

Just curious, is the Freedom Munitions ammo you have new or remanufactured?

Plinkers because the primers are an unknown factor. It takes more work to get an exact load, and for the novice reloader it's a lot easier.
I wouldn't expect any squibs. Squibs are not the fault of the primer since to have a squib the primer must fire. I also wouldn't expect any duds.

I would have to disagree about being "unknown". OP only stated he had "a" squib, meaning one (or even if he misnamed the problem, coulda been a"dud"?). We don't know if one primer was not seated correctly, or if the one primer is the one in a million "bad" primers from the manufacturer. Since there is not enough information, I'll just drop out...
