Great replies guys. Got another one for you. Detective Heigh in "Texas Killing Fields" carries a S&W Model 19, in contrast to the Glocks carried by the younger officers:

Watson probably carried an Enfield or some revolver in 450 Adams, perhaps a Tranter considering he was retired from the service in the 1870's and 80's. Of course at the time, such revolvers were high-tech. A luddite would carry a single-shot percussion.

Of course, he could have carried a Webley, who am I to argue.

Spencer in the Robert Parker novels carries a .38 snub. I think a Colt, but I don't remember. He moves to a Hi-Power if "expecting trouble" and the snub is a backup.

Hawk carried some big chrome 44 Mag.

Joe Pike carries a 357 Python

I think those are to give the detective and buddy some 'class'. I also note that detectives also like to listen to jazz and drink single malt. It is a bit of a cliche.

However, the more modern folks carry Glocks or Sigs. Some competitive shooter types like Lucas Davenport carry 1911s. Stone Barrington has a custom 1911. But those aren't for nostalgia but tuned up guns.

James Lee Burke's old sheriff (Hackberry Holland) in modern times still carries a SAA. I've actually seen that on some rural sheriffs in TX.

Indiana jones in the first movie....

Didn't he throw a very large revolver in his suitcase with the comment "I'm always careful."

Looked like a webley to my untrained eye.

The OP was asking about luddites carrying revolvers. I feel like many of the movie characters cited in this thread are guys from the 70's or 80's or even earlier. Carrying something that is correct for the period does not a luddite make.

Just finished the latest Sanford book, Buried Prey, and the bad guy checks his glock in his pocket to be sure the safety is off. Sanford get a couple anti gun shots in there also.

Gregg Hurwitz has a few novels I liked: "Troubleshooter", "The Program" and "The Kill Clause".

His character, Tim Rackley (a LEO), carries a S&W .357 Mag revolver.

Someone beat me to The Dark Tower, but good to see it was in the first reply. Of course in that series guns in general are pretty rare. Gotta read this new 8th part, is it part of the story or just the same universe?

Nick Nolte's gun in 48 Hours (stolen by the BG and used throughout most of the film) is a Model 29. The other BG chooses a full-length single-action revolver (Colt New Frontier?) as his weapon.

In the awful Dylan Dog movie of last year, the protagonist uses a Webley Mk VI in .455, with appropriate wood-bullet rounds for vampires, and probably silver for lycanthropes.

All my best,
Dirty Bob

Tackleberry in Police Academy. Yeah okay he switched to a Detonics-something at one point but still.

Several characters in Dexter have revolvers. The two that come to mind are Masuka with his ginormous piece at the bowling alley and Boyd Fowler from Season 5.

In Flashpoint (the TV show, not the movie), I've seen them use revolvers with their shield. There are a few episodes where bad guys have revolvers and the cops are counting down to when they're empty. The Judge is also used by a drug dealer in Season 1 (called "The Jury" on the show - they seem to purposefully misname guns on that show for some reason). They also use rubber bullets in revolvers.

One of the most powerful guns in Half Life is the Colt Anaconda.

In Firefly, they have what look like old style guns (lever actions and revolvers) that have futuristic sounds when being charged.

The tow truck driver from Men in Black carried a big wheelgun.

In the first season of Battlestar Galactica (the new one), they had a heavily modified 686. Later they used a virtually unmodified fiveseven.
There are also a few 4-shot derringers in BG.

In Psych, there is an episode where Lassider gets in a Western shootout with the bad guy, where the bad guy has a revolver and Lassider has his Glock. Lassider also owns a 4-shot derringer which appears to be his bump-in-the-night weapon.

On Police Academy, the big redneck brought a giant pistol to the practice range. When the instructor asked where he got it, he responded "My Mama got that for me!"

Stallone's character in The Expendables uses a single action revolver. Jason Statham is more of a ludite, he uses knives.
