sheepdog, please do tell more about Trijicons on those two. 'Specially on the Dick Special, since I would like to know who can install those. Hint, closer pics would help me visualize the method of mounting. I am, needless to say, envious of those sights.

Who squints at the DS sights, trying to even find the front one.

I am waiting for C&S to tell me it's time to send them the 629. I'm getting a set of their Extreme Duty sights installed and some other work done. Once that is complete, it will lose the Goodyears.

My only gun, a S&W model 67, paired with a sword made by Angus Trim. I customized the sword but I think I'll be leaving the revolver alone.

My latest Old Smith & Wesson

The same day I came home with a Victory Model my dealer took this in and held it for me. It's a roughly 1955 Highway Patrolman. I nornally don't care for 6" duty guns but I couldn't resist this one.

Can anyone tell me about this revolver ?

I bought it back in the early eighties through a gun dealer, who ordered it from John Jovino. I was wondering if anyone knows more about it? Approximate value, how many were made, etc. It looks like the Lew Horton model, but that was not who it was purchased from. It's a 25-2 in .45 acp caliber. Thanks for any information you can give me.

progun, I had one! I saw the add in Shotgun News, back in the middle early '80s and talked to my buddy-with-the-FFL. And to answer your question, I can't remember which of the big ads in SGNews I was reading. Sorry about that.

I didn't like the balance and sold it. The way it was built was interesting, since the barrel was so short that there wasn't room for the usual locking parts at the front of the ejection rod. Instead, they did a nice job of putting a spring loaded ball in the frame and a dimple in the crane that the cyclinder swings out on. When the cylinder goes shut, the ball pops into the dimple. It was sorta like, but not quite the same, as the old S&W triple lock in that regard. 'Cept it wasn't a triple, it just made a double lock.

They also filled in the hole in the front of the ejector rod shroud and I could barely see the plug. It was polished and blued quite well.

Modified for carry 25-2 model

Hi Bart, Thanks for the info. It sounds like you had the same gun. Some of the modifications included: shortened barrel, smaller hammer spur, K frame round butt (with rubber grips) and a smooth trigger instead of the serrated one. I think the red ramp front sight was installed also instead of the target sight. Kind Regards

There was a 25-3 (in .45 ACP) with a 3" barrel made for (as I recall) Lew Horton. Which was a bit confusing since the 25-3 model number had been used for the cased S&W Anniversary model chambered in .45 Colt. Which was available with only a 6" barrel with a square butt.
But as I recall it had the short ejector rod like their later .44 and .41 models. They were round butt models but they used the N-frame round butt grips which were slightly larger than K-frame grips. I think it was the first Horton limited edition big bore snub.

I recall in the early 1980s (1983?), reading an article in Guns & Ammo about a gunsmith/company converting standard N-frame revolvers to round butt configuration using Pachmayr K-frame grips with barrels shortened to 3".

I also recall later seeing ads for them in Shotgun News.
I think they only made them in .44 and .45. I tried to get one in .41 for off duty carry but I don't think they ever got around to doing that caliber.
I orderd six but never got any.

I suspect you have one of the converted models.
They seem to be bringing a pretty good price these days since all of the later factory made 3" N-Frames were made without pinned barrels.

Thanks for the info.

Blues Bear, Thanks for the info. I knew sombody would know more than I about these revolvers. I too saw them first in Shotgun news. I'm sure I purchased mine through John Jovino, but I guess they were made for Lew Horton. I heard somewhere, that Smith and Wesson actually did the conversion into a carry gun for Lew Horton. I previously thought that some gunsmith was hired to do the conversions. I purchased a matching holster at the time, since I figured it would be hard to find one. It's a pancake style, and has no makers name on it. The quality is excellent and I'm wondering if Smith and Wesson made those also. Thanks again for the info, Progun

Progun, I don't think the one you pitcured is a Lew Horton. Not if the frame is marked 25-2. What is the serial number? That would go a long way in helping solve the mystery.

To my knowledge, the N-frame snubs actually made by S&W as short barrel guns without the front locking apparatus were the extremely short 2" and 2½" models.

As far as I know, all of the 3" models without front latches were outside conversions. Jovino could very well have been one of the ones marketing such converted revolvers.

Of course I have learned to almost never say never when it comes to what S&W did in the past.

more discussion about the 25-2 snub

Blues Bear, You sound quite knowledgable about these. Here's another picture with the crane open. The serial number is N8050XX . I wiped the last 2 numbers out in the picture. Just don't feel comfortable posting complete numbers on the web. As you can see, it is a 3 inch barrel. And it is definitely a 25-2. I still have the sales slip somewhere. I think it was purchased around 1980 or so, but I'd have to check to be sure. Kind Regards, progun
