Details of a deadly Mac-10 submachine gun which was used to murder a music producer can now be revealed after the conviction of the drug dealer who hid it under his kitchen cupboards.

Mac-10 fact file
Deadly Mac 10 machine gun used in murder
David Swaby, 27, was jailed for seven years last Friday for possession of the gun that killed Richard Holmes, 21, four years ago in a row over “disrespectful” rap lyrics.

The gun was one of 90 blank-firing replica weapons converted by gunsmith Grant Wilkinson in his garden shed in Berkshire.

Watch police test fire the Mac 10

Wilkinson’s Mac-10s are linked to more than 50 shootings and were used in nine London murders, including the shooting in 2007 of Michael Dosunmu, 15 Favoured by drug gangs for its devastating firepower, the military-style weapons became known among inner-city gangs as the “spray and pray” gun.

One of them was fired in Bradford during the robbery in which PC Sharon Beshenivsky was killed in 2005.

Wilkinson, 34, was convicted at Reading Crown Court in August last year of nine firearm offences and faces a minimum of 11 years in jail.

Using the name Grant Wilson, Wilkinson bought 90 blank-firing replica guns in July 2004, which he told the registered dealer in Northolt, Middlesex, were props for a James Bond film.

Inside his workshop police found computer-operated lathes, workbenches, firearms and weapon components in one building and what appeared to be a test-firing range in another.

Wilkinson lived a lavish lifestyle with the profits, driving a Porsche and entertaining his girlfriend in five-star hotels.

Police are still searching for 39 of Wilkinson's Mac-10s and has offered a £10,000 reward for information leading to their recovery.

The gun in Swaby’s possession was found after an observant police community support officer noticed him acting suspiciously near a Mini Cooper car parked in New Road, Mitcham.

Police searched the car, which turned out to be stolen, and discovered 163 grams of pure class A drug MDMA – the pure form of rave drug ecstasy.

Officers then stopped Swaby as he drove a Peugeot 207 in Beddington Corner, Sutton, on June 2 last year, and found £15,000 cash with him.

At the time Swaby had been on the run for two and a half years after being convicted of other drug charges.

During a subsequent search of his flat in Mitcham, officers found several shotgun cartridges and rounds of 9mm ammunition lying on the kitchen worktop.

The Mac-10 loaded with 10 rounds of 9mm ammunition in the magazine was hidden behind a plinth under kitchen cupboards.

At Croydon Crown Court on Friday, Swaby, who pleaded guilty, was handed seven years for possessing a prohibited weapon, three years for possessing ammunition without certificate and 18 months for possessing criminal property.

He was also given six months for driving while disqualified, 12 months for possessing a prohibited weapon and two years for possessing class A drug with intent to supply with all charges to run concurrently.

A police spokesman said Swaby gave Sutton police the false name Vincent Burrows and then swapped to Marcus Burrows.

But fingerprint checks revealed his real identity and that he was wanted by Kingston Crown Court for sentencing on charge of possession with intent to supply class A and C drugs.

Investigations showed he had used the name Marcus Burrows to evade capture from police and even managed to obtain a genuine driving licence with his photo.

The spokesman said Swaby was not connected to any specific gang.

It is not known whether Swaby has used the gun in any other incident.

First to say, this story must be a fake, they don't allow guns like this in England. They are against the law, they have been for some time, and there is no way that criminals can get these guns, because it is against the law.

Wouldn't you love it if just once, the dummies that push for gun control would answer the question:

HOW DO YOU PLAN TO KEEP CRIMINALS FROM OBTAINING GUNS?

Never once have I heard a plan, realistic or not, on what they would do to achieve this impossible fantasy.

Pathetic.

camslam I thought you were being serious at first, then I read your second paragraph *phew*.

But yeah, where there's a will there's a way... (I think that's how that goes)

Gamera: I should have put in some rolling eyes, my bad. I just get fed up with the irrational, illogical, indefensible, crap, that people allow to govern them.

I'll never get it, and I am yet to debate, discuss, or argue with an anti, that can answer that question.

Not a fan of the gun laws in England, several states in our own country, and I pray that people keep buying guns, taking responsibility for their safety, and help keep the anti's at bay.

Sadly I fear instead of addressing the issue (that is, that criminals will get guns if criminals want guns), the antis will go on about how "it's easy to convert replica guns to real guns" so we should ban those too

That's exactly what they did.
They are going after blank firing and replica weapons.
IIRC the guy who made these MAC10s operable originally bought a consignment of 80 blank firing or replica guns from a company that provides movie props. He then converted them to fire live ammo.

Been doing it since guns became "banned".

They are restricted heavily there already, that is why the guy had to convince them they were being used for a movie. Airguns and even airsoft are also restricted, kids join theatre classes just to play airsoft.
Here in the US someone could use real full auto machineguns for movies with as much hassle as the guy in the story.

Searching for replica, fake, and air gun stories demanding enacting and calling for bans in England I got literaly tens of thousands of different news stories (not exaggerating) calling for more restrictions and bans, far too many to post dating back into the 90's (they banned thier guns in the 90s).

Oh check out these suggestions for carrying airsoft guns, you know the ones that shoot plastic bbs. It is about like suggestions here for real firearms:

The Legal Status of Airsoft, and some sensible precautions
Therefore, with the above in mind, and under present legislation, the hobby sport is perfectly legal, provided that you take the proper and common sense precautions.

Ensure that the Airsoft model in your possession does not exceed the power limits for this type of model.
This can be accomplished with ease. Your regular Airsoft gaming site will have a device designed to measure the muzzle velocity of your Airsoft model (a chronograph) to hand.
Using a 0.2 gram 6mm Airsoft BB pellet, measure the muzzle velocity by firing a series of three to five single shots.
If any of the shots exceed the limit for the class of Airsoft model you possess, do not use it, and have an Airsoft model technician (the site should be able to recommend one) reduce the power level to a more appropriate level.
Do NOT show any form of Airsoft model in a public place (other than the shop where you bought it).
When transporting your Airsoft model, put it in a container that can be secured (such as a gun case), in an unloaded condition, safety switch (if fitted) on, and with the battery, if an AEG, or the gas supply, if a gas operated model, removed.
Keep the model, and any ammunition/power source, separate whilst in transit from your home, to the legitimate gaming site where you'll be playing.

****... they are talking about TOYS.....

Awright geeezzaa! Its fer da lizards...... Any idea what an airsoft can do ter a lizard? Devistatin' I tell you, just devistating. Sorted mate.

that look like real guns hence police call outs etc :(
the guy was an out and out crim with a lathe you could make sten guns from scratch. The number of murders with firearms is less than a 100 each year so this guys actions actually affected the national crime stats.
don't think one criminal could really make a dent in US crime stats.

Seven years for murdering someone? No enhancements for using a firearm, or all the drugs possession/dealing?

Seven years for murdering someone? No enhancements for using a firearm, or all the drugs possession/dealing?

He isn't charge with murdering anyone, he is charged with having a gun that was used to murder someone.
In drug and criminal circles guns often change hands many times. This guy was a drug dealer, and people wanting to purchase drugs often trade valuable items for drugs, items including illegal firearms.
Drug dealers are ripe for home invasions and robberies because it is believed they will not go to the police, and they often like to have firearms for defense.

Here is the charges:

At Croydon Crown Court on Friday, Swaby, who pleaded guilty, was handed seven years for possessing a prohibited weapon, three years for possessing ammunition without certificate and 18 months for possessing criminal property.

He was also given six months for driving while disqualified, 12 months for possessing a prohibited weapon and two years for possessing class A drug with intent to supply with all charges to run concurrently.

He is never said to have killed anyone. The gun he owned which was found in his home was once used in a murder according to the detectives.
His charge is just for possessing it not using it.

so it is a fact that in the last 3 years, there where more crimes commited with fully automatic firearms (50 shootings overall, 9 of wich where deadly) in the UK, then in the past 20 years in the USA?

gun control works!
