I spent 2&1/2 hour at my club range today aand had a very good day. I took 2 older gentlemen, one who is a lifelong hunter, the other had never fired a pistol before. A good time was had by all. The rookie had had some trouble in his neighborhood and wanted to learn about guns with the idea of getting one for self defence. I brought 10 pistols so he could get a wide experience. He came in a little timid about things and thinking he should get some kind of automatic. By the end of the session, he was confidently loading and firing .38s in 3 different revolvers, an SP101, a Dan Wesson 15-2 and an old S&W Model 10. He knows what he wants now an was already asking when we could go again. His daughter and her boyfriend want to get a gun and he wants me to give them the same tryouts that he got. The other guy brought his Ruger Mark 111 .22 and a Taurus M85 and just fired away. He too wants another session.
Both of these men have a partial disabling illness and are patients where I work, I had more fun than they did, just in how much they enjoyed themselves.
Ordinarily the range is very lightly used, but today 3 different groups came in with kids, about 13 to 15. I walked around and talked to all of them and let the kids shoot a bunch of differeent guns. The one boy had come with his father and only brought a .22 rifle. I let him shoot a GI style .45, a Beretta .40 and the Dan Wesson with .38s. You should have seen his face, Then the guy with me and one of the other dads let him shoot a couple of .22 pistols.
The other boys had a great time also with different guns, one even got up the nerve to shoot the Taurus .45 LC titanium snubbie. Sort of like letting someone hit you in the hand with a hammer. His comment after the first round was "holy @#%$" But he emptied it. I did some shooting too, but getting the kids and the new guy involved was more enjoyable doing my own shooting.

Sounds like a great time was had by all. If only every day could be like that. Can you imagine what it would be like if that was your job?

I know you introduced the 4 golden rules and reinforced them over the session. ;)

Of course on the safety thing, tho all the dads had already done a good job of that already. Without the kids our sport and the Right To Keep And Bear Arms won't last.
