Rifles to drool over

Although I doubt most people would agree, the H&R Buffalo/Target models with peep sights are just about the nicest single shot rifles under $1,500!

The top is the .45-70 model, the bottom is the .38-55 model. :D

My needs are simple:

1. Just a .50 bmg - any .50 bmg pretty much - An Armalite AR-50 would do *juuuust* fine.
2. Savage 12 F Class precision target rifle in 6.5-284 (yes I'm an F class poser since the furthest I have access to is 600 yards, but still - it's fun)
3. Kel-Tec RFB (Kel Tec is notorious for not having stuff available, due to their small production capacity and low price point - this is no exception - vaporware at present)
4. DPMS LR rifle in .260 rem

That would be enough to make me happy (maybe) for 15-20 years, coupled with what I already have. The impediment to 1, 2, and 4 is just money.

PTK not to be blasphemous about this but those rifles would be awesome sniper's rifles with 10x42 scopes, in my opinion. those would be some big @$$ wounds in and out. OUCH!!!

USMCDK

With the sights currently on them, I don't think a scope would improve my aim unless I fired past 300 yards. Even then, can you say bullet drop? Most scopes aren't able to be properly calibrated over a wide variety of ranges for the 45-70.

PTK With that much propellant behind the bullet how much bullet drop you talking??? The M16 shoots great a the 500 yard line with a lil click click here of the rear sight aperture!!!

.308 is +1.7" at 200 yards if zeroed properly (165gr)

.45-70 is -22.9" at 200 yards if zeroed properly (405gr)

See the problem? :)

Here's a graph...

Not to knock the Buffalo Classic (I have a neat little Handi Rifle myself) but in my completely biased opinion this is my favorite single shot rifle, and I got it for well under $1500. Of course, the Euro vs. Dollar exchange is a lot worse these days, so Pedersoli's are a lot more expensive than they used to be:

Shot my first BPCR match last weekend and had a blast. Hearing the clang of the bullet on metal is about the most satisfying thing I've ever experienced.

BTW, I agree with PTK about scopes and .45-70's. The tang site on mine is plenty accurate, and easily adjustable if you know the range you're shooting at.

Flint Lock??? Would that be a muzzle loader???

1874 Sharps in .45-70. They're a cartridge rifle, but the .45-70 was originally designed for black powder.

It's way more accurate than I'm capable of - the rainbow trajectory just means you have to know your range.

so then why is there a flint lock on that rifle??? does it engage a firing pin or something??? I have never seen a flint lock cartidge shooting rifle or pistol before.. Please do explain for I lack the knowledge oh wise master of said rifle??? LoL!!! seriously though please tell me I am curious

It's not a flint lock - the hammer strikes the firing pin, which strikes the primer. The .45-70 Govt. was a transitional cartridge - one of the first with a brass case and primer, but still using black powder (45 caliber, 70 grains of black powder, hence the name). When smokeless came along people started using that instead, but it can shoot either one. It was the official cartridge of the US military for quite some time. The bullet is slow and moves in an arc, but when it gets there it hits with a THUMP.

If you've never seen it, rent Quigley Down Under. That's the movie that got me hooked on Sharps Rifles.

Thanks, my girlfriend just saw that movie, those comments and we watched Quigley Down Under. She wants a .45-110 now. :D

I saw a gorgeous excellent condition Stoner 63 machine gun at the gun show last weekend. Does that count as drool worthy? :D Asking price was $65,000.

The gentleman that was selling it said there are only approximately 40 of them that ever made it into civilian hands. Now that would be a cool toy to show up with at the range! What a neat looking gun, and I bet it really puts out some firepower. Talk about a gun that was way ahead of its time. I can see why the SEALs loved the Stoner in Vietnam.

looks to be so but how does that work??? Turn the handle up towards your face in a backwards motion then pull bolts back???
