So I was thinking about getting myself a nice new rimfire rifle for some cheap plinking, but before I jumped in and just got myself a ruger (10/22 of course) I figured I would just see what you all would say is the best rimfire you can get for your money.

Sounds like you are on the right track. You won't find any other .22 rimfire with the aftermarket support that a 10/22 has. The only problem you'll have is deciding which upgrades you want.
I now have over $700 in my 10/22. I don't wish I had any of it back.

Get a 10/22. If you're against Ruger's politics, get a used 10/22.

If you're going real cheap, I hear good things about the surplus Romanian Trainers. Been thinking about one, myself, for $60.

Cheap Plinking

Marlin 60

Granted no aftermarket parts , then again I don't need them. For $99 , I buy ammo and go shoot. No extra mags to buy, accurate, simple , and reliable. Partial to the new Woodtone [tm] finish myself. :)

IN a bolt gun the CZ 452 , is a great gun.

Used , too much fun with a used Rem 514 single shot bolt gun.

Levers- used 9422 , Browning BLR, or Marlin 39.

Friendly advice , don't shoulder the BLR...it'll follow you home. ;)

I've got .22 autoloaders, bolt action repeaters, bolt action single shots, pumps, and a lever action.

If I had to sell all but one, the one I would keep is my Marlin 39A lever action.

Don't get me wrong, the others (including the 10/22) are great, but the 39A is the best of the bunch... at least in my opinion.

If you are set on a 10/22 (not a bad thing...) go ahead and get a wood stocked version. You can buy a VERY good (many choices available) aftermarket stock if you want one. The Ruger synthetic stocks are cheesy.

My vote is for a CZ452, I can't think of a more accurate out of the box rimfire that is so affordable.

Is anyone familiar with the CZ511, their semi-auto .22? I'm interested, but haven't heard anything about it, good or otherwise.

I recently aquired a Thompson Center "Classic" .22 and it shoots great ! Damn fine accuracy and it didn't set me back too many FRN's. checkitout ! :D

In my opinion, you shouldn't shortchange yourself with a .22. Many do. Just "plinking" is underrated as an opportunity to work on your skills as a rifleman. Get a decent .22 in the general trim that your full-sized rifle is in. I hunt with bolt actions, and my first rifle, a very accurate Remington 581, is my mainstay. A friend of mine got a CZ 452 that really impressed me for its accuracy and finish. Remington is now making a full-sized 700 in .22, as is Ruger making their full-sized M77 in .22.

A friend at Dallas Pistol Club had a couple of beautiful full-sized single-shot bolt action .22s that he'd gotten through the CMP. We were having fun knocking down 2" rimfire silohuettes with it at 100yards with their iron sights. Lord, I'd love to have one!

Skills with your .22 while plinking:
  • Rapid target acquisition from field position with and without sling
  • good breathing
  • good trigger control
  • operating the rifle (bolting, magazine, reloading single) while keeping the rifle at the ready, on target)
  • being rewarded for a perfect shot going precisely where you aimed it
  • conditioning yourself to concentrate on the target, rather than the recoil ("Flinch-Away!tm" Buy yours today!)
