I have recently acquired a Walther P-5 Compact that I'm considering refinishing. In the course of researching this, Tripp Research (hard chrome), Birdsong's Black_T, Robar's Roguard/NP3, and ARS's Metacol keep popping up.

I'm thinking black satin slide & controls over a grey/silver matte frame, and a nice set of Nill's grips, so Robar and ARS seem to be the leading choices, both seem to be fine finishes. This will be more of a 'picnic gun', so ultimate durability under combat/hostile conditions is not the leading priority (though durability is always a plus).

Have any of you all had experience with both and a preference? TIA.

I have a few Robar finishes, and have seen allot...they do one first class job, not just on the outside finish, but all inside working pieces as well. I will use them again, and have never heard anyone, speak badly of them, or their finish. They do have a spring, and fall....internet "deal" ususally about a 20% discount....something to consider.

I recently got a slide & barrel back from Robar (NP3 coat) and I need to ask them a question. I have tried their website, but it appears to be down. Does anyone have a good URL for a new one (if there is one)? I'll try to find my invoice and a phone number for now...but I can second the kind words spoken about them here.

Mike,

I've seen several guns in ARS' Metacol and a lot of guns in Black-T. The ARS/Metacol guns, while functional, were not as nicely done as the Black-T finishes. The Metacol wasn't as even and consistant as the Black-T.

I would recommend the Black-T or a Robar finish.

The only one I can really speak for is Robar's NP3. I a 2 1/2 in Mod 19 S&W that I've had for almost 35 years that's worn it for about the last 5 years. Recently had a G26 done in the NP3 also.
Very good finish and Robar stands behind it. Other than that,Black T
looks really good.

Robar it is. My local shop sends stuff there regularly, so I'll have them ship it next cycle. Will post pics when done. Thank you all. M2
