Robarms XCR in MI

So MI makes you measure the length of firearms when they are completely folded? Opposite to the rest of the country?

I believe if the rifle is under 30 or 28 inches when folded and can still fire, its a pistol in MI.
Our handgun laws, from what I understand about them, suck too.

The XCR comes with

Fixed stock
Folding stock
VLTOR adjustable stock
Folding adjustable stock

Go to the XCR forum www.xcrforum.com, there are a number of folks with the various permutations who can give you an answer.

Not of course that I would EVER assume anyone would ever try to game the law.

If you purchased with the fixed stock and happened to order a folding stock seperately........? The swap is performed with an Allen key and 30 seconds.

Well given the similarity between a two and a quarter foot long rifle and a handgun, I can see the rationale for that law

Actually, the law was written before the NFA was. But yeah, it probably still came down to Detroit.

Anything under 30" gets green carded.

Well if you register it as a pistol, you can carry it with your concealed pistol permit

:)

What this is is an opinion by a previous anti-gun Atty General named Frank Kelly. It currently has the force of law, but could be reversed by the current Attorney General, try contacting his office of have one of your state reps do it.

My Yugo M70 is registerd as a pistol, along with my mossburg 500 with a folding stock.

I had looked at the new AMD AK, but since its less then 26" folded its a illegal short barrel rifle in MI.

I live in MI and I think this is a good thing.

There are plenty of other rifles you can buy/use as rifles. Having a fully capable rifle that you can carry with your CPL is a good thing. Makes a great "truck gun" since MI laws on long guns in a vehicle are a bit shady.

If the rifle, with the stock folded and can fire, is between 26 and 30 inches in length, it is a pistol and need a purchase permit and registration.

Plus side? Because of the more positive concealed carry laws over the decade, MI is a shall issue state. Meaning, if you want to conceal carry an XCR, you can do it. I believe whoever is responsible for giving you a CPL MUST do so if you qualify for one, regardless of the weapons appearance.

I might just do that when I get a PLR-16.

That's a funny "pistol". I like it, but it's a funny "pistol". I know...what's in a word.

Dr Dremel, can I ask what the process was for you to complete the purchase on that?

I've been posting on several local boards about getting a shotgun registered as a pistol to carry while doing some rustic camping on state land.

I would prefer a 16" barrel w/ folding stock, but something like you have will do if I can't do that.

Any info on where to purchase (or did you build?) and register it would be great.

Thanks!

Is that 870 a NFA item? Barrel looks shorter then 18"

Did you get around the MI law that under 18" barrel is a Short barrel shotgun and is Illegal, by it being a C&R?

I put a 18" barrel and a folding stock on mossburg 500 and took it to my sheriff dept and regeristerd it as a pistol.

I think too that you can't have less then 16" barrel on rifles or 18" on a shot gun, even if the gun is over the magic 26"

Just cause Michigan allows it, don't mean the FED does with out their $200.00 dollars AOW stamp or your Class 3 dealer shortening it for you for five dollars if he is the manufacturer or such.

Just cause a state makes something legal, don't mean that Uncle Sugar will buy it.

What defense you going to use at your Federal trial. They allow it in Detroit?

Let me know if that works!

Go figure.

Its not that I want the folding stock, I prefer fixed stocks honestly, most of the folding ones Ive used (friends in ohio) are junk IMO, its just a P.I.T.A. to have to have a dealer put a fixed stock on a rifle for me just so I can buy it.

I think I'll stick with my bushy!

That is what I am trying to do. Did you run into any hassles with this?

Mi is more restrictive then the ATF, no short barrel weapons at all, unless they are a C&R, to my understanding. That why i was asking how he got away with the short barrel shotgun in michigan, a C&R gun?

I had no trouble with my Mossburg at the Sheriff dept. Just like a doing a pistol. I have been down there a few times and they know me as the guy with the wierd guns. I also registered a Yugo M70 with no trouble.

That's good to hear Brion. My local PD knows me very well, and I usually stay and chat with whoever is on dispatch and the officers in the office at the time. It's a small community and most cops there are gun guys. I figure befriending them is a good idea. :)

I've heard both positive and negative in terms of legality here. I can't find anything that says I cannot do this, and your indications of doing it yourself with positive results is encouraging.
