The reason I started reading Heinlein books was because of quotes by Lazarus Long I found online. If you're interesting science fiction, I'd also recommend Scott Westerfeld and Lois McMaster Bujold. I find that in this kind of reading, I get the most satisfaction from reading an author's books in chronological order. Even in Heinlein's loosely knit together universes, he draws on previous characters and ideas in later books.
