I have a Rock Island 1911 standard type. I've been shooting and reloading 230 gn round nose, but I'd like to try some 200 gn truncated flat point, but I have read that some 45's may not handle them very well without feed ramp mod.

My RI is new, and the gap between the ramp and barrel is very small. I'm wondering if RI took this onto consideration and if non-round nose bullets will feed reliably, before I commit to loading them. Anyone have experience with them in a RI standard 1911?

My RI Compact has digested everything it has been fed, including Berrys 200 grs hybrid hollow point, which have a truncated cone profile. You might have to fiddle the seating depth a little longer. I didn't. If you can get a couple to make up some dummies with, it would save you the hassle if for some odd reason they don't work.

The only time that I've had any feeding problems out of my RI compact with anything besides FMJ was magazine related. I bought a couple of Colt magazines for my compact that just won't feed anything except FMJ ball ammo. Turns out I got two counterfeit magazines.

The gap is part of the 1911 specs. It's not a problem. Rounds of the type you are interested in should feed properly if at a long enough OAL.

I use Hitek coated LSWCs which ostensibly are even more resistant to feeding well. Never had a problem with them when seated to the proper depth-- and it's not that hard to find the proper depth. Truncated cone bullets should feed for you with no problem.

A buddy of mine use to have an RIA 1911 and regularly loaded up lead 200 gr. SWC bullets for it. The barrel was box stock without having anything done to it in terms of getting it to feed something other than 230 gr. ball ammo.
