Can anyone tell me about this manufacturer? I have my eyes set on a 1911 by Rock Island Armory at a local gun store. Its being sold for $399.00.

Here is just the place to ask this question!

(Just a note - this kinda post is bad taste and annoying. Pimping another discussion forum as the first response to a question is rather low and tactless. GHill)

I definitely wouldn't pay $399 for a RIA. That's around the price for a new Springfield Armory milspec give or take $50. The Rock Islands are good guns for about $280. That's how much I paid each for a pair of them from www.southernohiogun.com

Free shipping to the FFL, no credit card charges, what else can you ask for :D

That's way overpriced. I got mine at a gunshow for $299.00, and they can be found even cheaper online, though the FFL transfer fee charged by some shops might negate the online savings.

Shop around, get a better deal. They're great 1911A1's.

I guess y'all right about the price. I saw a WW2 Springfield Armory (Brand New) for $429.00.

Just curious, I've always wanted a 1911. Any one wants to get rid of one or WTT one?

The RIA is the best entry 1911 pistol you can buy. The usual problem is the extractos and recoil springs. Of course the sights have to go. their too small

Quality control on RI seems to be hit and miss. My buddy has on that's had atleast 1,000 rounds through it. We did 500 in one session. Not one hickup out of the whole 1,000 rounds. Iwas really impressed with it so i bought on of their commander sized models. Quality control inspector must have been on vacation that day. First shoot went boom just like it shoulda. Second one didn't go completly into battery. Third one was the same. Out of 8 times it didn't go completly into battery four times. Took it back to dealer. Got it back 45 days later. Same thing again. Tried several brands of ammo and various mags. Still the same deal. All the mags worked perfectly in another RI and a Springfield. Just got a 22 lb spring from Wolfe. Gonna try that one out next week. Sure hope i can make it work. I like the way it feels and think it has potential as a carry gun. I hope.

I've read of similar problems with RIA 1911s that were not full sized (mostly from 1911forum).

Happily, the full sized RIA I bought last Saturday has worked exceptionally well so far. It has actually alleviated my apprehension about owning another 1911 due to two other poor performances in the past early on in my gun collection addiction. (Both IAI/AMT longslides.)

Only problems I've seen so far (from 100 rounds) was hammerbite, shooting slightly to the left (since corrected by drifting the rear), and the very heavy, strong spring of the Novak's mag causing the top round (when fully loaded to 8 rounds - 2 out of 3 occassions) to nosedive into the frame (FTF). When loaded less than full, mag worked fine. Will have to load full and let sit for a few days to loosen it up. Oh, also, have to do something about that ~7.5 lbm trigger. Otherwise, worked fine. Thinking of buying another as this one is for my dad. As cheap as it is, I think it would be a great platform to try out a few things internally myself instead of sending it out to get worked on.

The consensus seems to be that the fullsize (FS) RIA's are pretty solid bargains, and function flawlessly after the first 50 rounds or so.

It's the MS and CS models of RIA that can apparently, sometimes run into problems, particularly with regard to the recoil spring and the extractor. The "Other 1911's" forum at 1911Forum has a number of RIA owners who post regularly.

My 5" RIA has run 100%, with about 500rds of FMJ thru it. It's my only 1911 that has proven reliable, and by FAR the least expensive!!

I've seen them at local shows for $279 NIB, I got mine used for $200 :) Then added grips and a drop-in trigger job. It's an outstanding shooter.

I paid $295.00 for a RIA off of gunbroker. Full-size, 5" bbl.

Pretty good deal, haven't got very many rounds through it, yet, but it has so far functioned 100%. I have also read of problems with the compact RIA's, but the 5" models are good deals. I don't think I have read of a serious complaint with the 5" models.

I would like to ditch the grips mine came with and get some different ones, and replace the sights. Maybe a ramp and throat job for hollowpoints, but the thing has run so far with the HP's (remington, I think..I'll have to look) I use for .45, and it has done it without choking.
