I have a Rock River Tactical CAR M4 on the way. I want to buy a couple thousand rounds, preferably of a couple of different "brands."

I see a lot of "surplus" NATO and South American 5.56 out there for good prices, and much of it comes pretty well regarded by many.

All guns not created equal, however - does anyone have any suggestions on decent surplus ammo that typically shoots well in the "Wylde" chambered Rock River guns?

Thanks!

I plan on ordering from www.lancerammo.com. The ranges back home won't allow for FMJ so I'm going with 1000rds of 68gr BTHP and 1000 of the 55 soft-points.

I've also found ultramaxx at www.midwayusa.com and some misc stuff at www.ammoman.com and www.surplusammo.com.

I guess all in all it depends on what type of shooting and or hunting you intend to do and the local policies.

So how do you like your RRA, ever compare it to a Colt say 6920. I've got two dealers on hold, 1 trying to locate a Colt 6920 and other a RRA Entry Tactical model....it's a race to see who can come through first.

For relatively affordable factory "match" ammo, try the Black Hills blue box (reman) loads, in 52, 55, 62, 68, 69, 75, and 77gr varieties. It's $15-16 per box of 50 rounds.

The only "surplus" I'll shoot in my guns anymore is Federal XM193. Expect to pay around $190-220 per case.

I own a Bushmaster 20" A2 and just got a RRA 16" carbine A4 upper and lower from Legal transfers that I just had to join together. The RRA has a match trigger, US property marked lower, GG&G sights, chrome barrel. It is made beautifully and is much lighter then the Bushmaster, very accurate and easy to shoot. I too have to use soft point or hollow points at the lacal range, so I use Black Hills remanufactured in the blue box. Its great stuff, and accurate, the only thing I'd shoot is American Eagle HP, about the same price and accurate.

RRA guns will digest pretty much any .223 you feed 'em. Even the "dreaded" Wolf. Mine actually is going on 5,000 rounds of Wolf polymer with no problems whatsoever.

I also shoot alot of the Radway Green Surplus & WWB, both of which shoot very good tho the RG is a tad underpowered, about the same as Wolf....in the 2900fps range.

i'm not an ammo snob in my other guns. i'll put anything through any of my other guns besides my ars or my kimber. however, the only thing i shoot through my ars is lake city. i get it at ammoman i know i sound like a commercial, but i seriously like the balance of accuracy and price i get from the lake city stuff.

When buying bulk ammo there is a difference between M193 and M193PD or M855 and M855PD. Loose packed ammo is usually PD.

The "PD" stuff is definately lower grade ammo. I bought 2 cases of 855PD. The first case was pretty good and I only culled out several rounds for bullet setback or split brass around the neck. The second case had around 15-20 rounds I wouldn't load up. Everything I ran through my gun ran fine.

I am only buying boxed 193 and 855 from now on.

The Radway Green has worked well in my buddies Bushmaster and RRA. I had seven FTE out of the 900 rounds I shot. Normally after the 300 round point was when I experienced problems. It is accurate but under powered like was mentioned above.

I just checked the RRA website and it shows a Tactical CAR A4 with a 5.56 Nato chamber. I think the only Wylde chambered rifles are the 20". You should be able to use any good quality ammo. I use boxed XM193 in my M4's.

Georgia Arms Ammo
I buy the 55gr "Canned Heat"... 500 rounds in an Ammo can for $85. This stuff is clean, consistent, and has proved to be pleasantly accurate in EVERY AR it's been through so far. I use it pretty much exclusively thes days, as do both my AR shooting buddies.

Agree with Gary G23. RRA makes rifles is both 5.56 and Wylde chambers - you might want to confirm what you have.

+1 for GA Arms stuff.

My Tactical Car M-4'gery loves the stuff. It's cleaner than some of the other reload stuff and not corrosive like imported ammo could be.

My understanding is that the Wylde chamber can handle both .223 Rem and 5.56 Nato. The chambers marked ".223 Remington" are the ones you have to watch for overpressurization with the 5.56 Nato rounds.

The Ammo Oracle has excellent info on .223/5.56 ammunition and I'm pretty sure it does mention the Wylde chamber.

You can also go to AR15.com and go to the "Ammunition" part of the forum...plenty of discussions on various ammo including what works and what doesn't.

All that being said, if you're just plinking try Wolf - I run it (55 gr and 62 gr) through my Colt LE6920 ALL DAY LONG and have had no problems whatsoever (about 4k rounds of Wolf so far). I've also got quite a bit of SHTF (Israeli IMI SS109, Radway Green SS109, and SA Battlepacks). You're looking at about $105 + shipping for Wolf vs. ~$200 + shipping for some of the other M193 or SS109 flavors.

Try out a few different brands before you buy in bulk to make sure your RR can handle them, then grab a case. Also look at Ammunition Store for ammo - I usually get my Wolf through them if a gun show isn't handy.

Good luck with it and keep us posted!

The specs on Rock River's Tactical CAR A-4 says it's chambered for .223/5.56 NATO. I have this same rifle and called RRA for verification to be sure.

Yes, I was wrong about the chamber. I don't know where I got that from ...

Regardless, I have rifle in hand - have not shot it yet but stripped and lubed it. Will provide range report next week when I get to the range.

I think I am going to get some of the GA "Canned Heat" and see how that goes. I got some ammo at the shop to get me started until then.
