Romanian .22lr

I've browsed through a few other sites,and several posts dealt with the Russian/Romanian .22lr training rifles.Most of them were unhappy with the performance/magazine fit/availability of parts,etc. I bought one of these rifles,4yrs ago,and I love it!After a good cleaning,I mountrd a Tasco 3-9x40 scope on Ironsiter rings(screw-mount,not clamp-on).I zeroed it at 1ooyds,and I can put all 10 rounds into a 1/2" area,time after time.This rifle has the following stamps on the receiver top:UMC2/1973/U-6422. I bought 4 mags,and used them to make 2 10-shot mags,and I've never had a problem.Any comments/questions?

Mine was fine and lots of fun until it broke. I'm curious how you made 10 shot mags out of the standard mags....

About 10 years ago, a friend of mine placed an order for one when I did and we were both satisfied with the accuracy. However, mine had magazine issues where the bullet would hang up on the base of the magazine ramp. We swapped magazines and for whatever reason, it didn't happen in his rifle, so that solved the problem.

If I recall, we were shooting chunks of gravel off a table... not the safest practice (even with eye protection), but we found hitting a 1/2" stone completely possible, though challanging, at 25 yards with inexpensive CCI Blazer and Remington Thunderbolts.

We paid $49 each, so I feel, despite the sloppy fit and rough machining marks, it was worth the money.

As for consistent 1/2" groups at 100, that's pretty impressive. I understand some folks spend hundreds or more to specialize .22LR rifles to do just that... and they're not always successful. My buddy scoped his and was able to get those groups as well, but only at about a quarter that range, so yours sounds like a real winner.

I have one made in '71. Sure, lots of machining is rough and the trigger is a bit long, but it is smooth and pretty light. The chamber is nice and tight, which has got to help accuracy. Only problems are occasionally it doesn't feed too smoothly and also the notch in the bolt for the ejector is messed up so sometimes the bolt pops out when ejecting the spent round.

I've gotten 3/4" groups at 50yd with Remington Subsonic ammo and the iron sights. It shoots at least as well as I do. Subsonic ammo seems to match the flip up sights at 25/50 yd. Haven't tried 100yd yet. Not going to scope it, other rifles do that far better. For $90, I am happy. Considering it is older than I am and has been fired countless times, the issues have never stopped me shooting, and it shoots great.

Mine has been a great little gun. Not the prettiest, finest wood, etc, but the thing shoots really well, no issues at all.
I missed all the $49 ones, but at $120 OTD it was still a steal.

RimFireCentral has LOTS of info, and unless you tell us which one, it's kinda hard, unless we assume that you are talking about a cugir M1969 .22, and that takes a 5 round magazine.

Now a TOZ 18 etc. (winchester wildcat with a BETTER barrel, sights and trigger)
Has both a 5 and 10 round magazine.

I've got a Romanian RPK trainer I picked up a few years back ... bought 3-10 rounders one doesn't feed worth a crap but the other 2 are perfect ... not really sure what its capable of but with bulk ammo from walmart a 2" spinner at 50 yards is boring ... the wood and metal are typical of an AK of the region.

That scope was off a Yugo RPK I built ... both are long gone to fund another project but I still have the 22 trainer!

Romanian mods

The magazines on the Umc's are as stock, 5-shot. As I said in my post,I combined the stock mag,with another,and using the follower spring from a 10-round (an old one I picked up from a gun show,yrs ago),I cut the UMC mag 3/8"below the locking lug.The second Umc mag,I cut Even with the rear of the ramp,and wire-welded them together.The bottom of the Umc mags can be slid off,to replace/insert the longer spring from the 10-rnd mag,then slid back on.It works great,and you can adjust the tension by experimenting with small pieces of wood dowels,under the spring.
