Romanian AK47

Speaking of ammo

I understand the AKs can take different cartridges depending on where they are made. Any in particular that I should avoid because it's hard to find and expensive? Any that are particularly abundant. I'm definitely getting one as soon as cash allows. BTW thanks everyone for the input already recieved. I love THR, this is the nicest online group I've ever met.:D

Most AKs are chambered for the 7.62x39 cartridge. Some are chambered for the 5.45x39 cartridge, which is the same case necked down. It was adopted by the Soviets in the AK-74 rifle, which is essentially the same rifle as the AKM, just with a smaller hole in the barrel. Some AKs have been modified to shoot the 5.56x45 and 7.62x51 NATO cartridges, but these rifles are more rare.

AK's are great. They just keep chugging along, an absolute beauty of simplicity and mass production. This one is my homebuild, with a 75-rd magazine. Good times. :D

That's not completely accurate. The 5.45 round has a smaller case diameter than the 7.62. Completely different round.

You know, at first I didn't believe you. I was always told, or at least gained the impression, that the Russians simply necked down their existing cartridge. So I did a little Googling. You are right. My bad.

Here's some cartridge drawings I found:

I thought the same thing until I actually bought a 5.45 and looked at the ammo side by side. Its probably because they're both x39, it just sounds like something that was necked down.

I'm seriously thinking about picking one up today, Dunham's has WASR-10s on sale for $329, if these aren't the single stack low cap rifles, I might just buy one.

Q?

Are there any 922(r) compliance issues with these rifles? Can I buy an an underfolding stock and attach it without ending up in the pokey?

I went and looked at some AKs this morning, and its only led me to more questions.....

All of the Dunhams stores in my area are sold out of WASR-10s but I got a raincheck for one, I looked at the side folder models but am not willing to pay $100 more for one of those. They also had a cute little low cap model with a dragonov stock for around $250- is this too much for this model? How hard is it to modify it to take regular AK magazines- is it a prospect for a steady hand with a dremel tool?

It's fairly straightforward but I'd probably go with one of the newer WASR-10 GPs. They come with a better G2 fire control group already, plus they have a threaded barrel and bayo lug.

That is a beautiful picture of a beautiful rifle. If that's your home build, you've done very well.

Here's a pic of mine! Great gun, great price on gun & magazines extremely reliable. I got mine finished in gun kote because the finish had surface rust and I figured I'll keep this gun around forever. Only problem now is getting ammo.

When I was practicing indoor room clearings, etc with my GP WASR what I found extrememly annoying was the mag would flop from side to side, making a low but audible sound.

I find this distracting, and thus have an AK with no mag wobble I really enjoy.

The GP WASR 10s IMHO would be the Cats Meow if somebody fixed the mag wobble. Until this time I rate them 8/10, instead of the 9/10 I wish they could be.

romanian

The romanian wasr-10 are fine rifles. The stock might need a little work, the front sight might have a little cant toit, but over all it is a fine rifle.

I never had a problem with my WASR-10. It was a great little shooter before we parted ways in a deal for a Garand.

I love my GP-WASR-10.

No sight cant, no gas block cant, mag wobble is what one should expect from a military weapon (this varies depending on which monkey at Century did the conversion).

It's an older one with no bayo lug, no side folder, no muzzle device -- just the way I like 'em. I had to put my own G2 FCG in.

For those complaining about accuracy, now with this ammo shortage is the time to handload.

My 4 MOA WASR (with Wolf FMJ) went to a 2.5 MOA WASR with handloads. But el cheapo ammo and get el cheapo performance.

If you don't like the cost of handloading and "bought the rifle to shoot cheap ammo", don't be surprised if you get cheap ammo performance.

Almost 1000rds through it, no malfunctions of any kind.

GP-WASR-10. Some of my magazines wobble, but not too badly. The rest are snug.

A quick fix might be bulgarian waffle mags (and make SURE they're bulgarian, not US). They fit a bit tighter than steel mags, and they weigh less too.

The Bulgies didn't fit in our WASRs at first. I had to Dremel out some burrs in the mag well. It was a 3 minute operation to polish out the burrs in the mag well. Now they are super snug.

OK I'm Sold

OK, I'm sold. Came here for info on the AK, got it in abundance. Now I have a few questions:

1) Is it legal to purchase, own, and shoot one of these in Wichita KS?
2) Which particular model is a good one to get, quality and price wise? (feel free to post a link to a seller site) I'm worried about buying something crappy since I'm a n00b at this.
3) What is WASR? How does it differ from non-WASR?
3) Where do I get one? I know Gander Mountain doesn't carry anything like this (strictly hunting stuff), so where to look?
4) Got plenty of handguns but I never owned a rifle before. Are there any instructions on how to operate it and clean it?
