Anybody have one??? How accurate do you find them to be? Am I better off sticking with my Mosin's in this caliber???? Thanks for any help or comments.

I understand that these rifles' accuracy will be heavily influenced by the ammo. Keep in mind that the Russian army has used the 7.62x54 RR for firearms (sniper rifles, Moisin Nagant 91 Infantry Rifles, and MG's ) back to the late 1800. This round is also manufactured for the Russian PK and PKM General Purpose Machine Gun. In this case, for machine guns, it is desirable to have some dispersion in machine gun fire. Ammunition made for this purpose can be made to looser tolerances. Thus, if you use ammunition manufactured for machineguns in this rifle, this may cause some disappointments as the rifle will surely not perform to your expectation. The 148 grain LPS ball ammo or the 181 grain yellow tipped heavy ball load (this was made for the M 1910 Maxim) may yield marginal accuracy, perhaps 2-3 MOA at 100 yards.

Commercial ammunition such as in the 180 grain loading, is available in the US from companies like Norma, or those from Sellier and Bellot. However, these are made for hunting and can be quite expensive.

Wolf comes to mind as a supplier of ammunition for this type of firearm. Russian 7N1 ammunition will be the most optimal ammunition as this is Russian ammunition made for modern Russian sniper rifles. But this type of ammunition is harder to obtain. I understand that due to their primers, Russian ammunition has an effective life of about 10 years. After this, the accuracy begins to deteriorate. If you could obtain the dedicated Russian sniper ammunition, you should see sub MOA accuracy.

It is my understanding that you should not use the Heavy (180gr) ammunition in these. I've only gotten mine out once since picking it up and we put 75 rds of 147gr Czech Silver Tip through it. We were basically just having fun and getting used to the offset scope so weren't too worried about accuracy, but it seemed reasonable. My 12 yr old son really likes it because of the recoil system.

There are some other threads about this if you do a search. Most of the comments about accuracy are good. I seem to recall someone making 400 yd shots because that is as far as the range went. (Mine is only 100 yds.)

I have one, pretty nice shooting rifle but a little on the long side. I say if you want one and can afford it go ahead and get one, they are fun toys. If you want a good accurate long range .30 cal semi-auto then get an AR-10.

Nice, fun, pretty accurate if you do your part, and ABSOLUTELY SHOULD NOT BE FIRED WITH 180GR AMMO.

I have fired many 180 grain rounds through mine, with no battering of the receiver, and I call bunk on those who say otherwise.

That said, you won't realize the accuracy potential unless you handload for yours, or get the Russian "sniper" ammo.

These are a fun rifle, and I've used mine to shoot those pesky prairie dogs who decide to lay in their holes, barely exposed. The round goes right through the dogpile bunker and does bad things to the prairie dog! These are fun rifles to shoot.

If you choose to shoot milsurp through them, do yourself a favor and disassemble the rifle, and make sure that each round you intend to shoot fits easily into the chamber. Some will not, and depending on whether the hammer can reach the firing pin, those which will not go all the way in your chamber can really ruin your day!

YMMV.

Heavy Ball in PSL?

Everything I've read says don't use heavy ball in a PSL. I also read some where using a M1 Garand spring instead of the stock spring would reduce the pounding. any thoughts? what about a recoil buffer?

Remember that the majority of 7.62X54R surplus is corrosive, and cleaning a semi-auto every time you shoot it will be a PITA compared to a Mosin.

My PSL will shoot circles around both my 91/30 and M44 but that isn't saying much. I find that for accuracy, I can hold the 9 ring or better on the 500yd NRA target with 7N1. It doesn't really like most of the surplus ammo I've given it.
