Lots of folks seem to favor the H&R/NEF shotguns for a basic break-open single shot. I don't see much mention of the Rossi models even though they are quite similar in design.

I have one in .410 and it's served me well for several years, although I'm not a heavy user. It just seems to fit me and balance better than the H&R's.

I know that H&R has a long history behind them, are mostly better finished, and are made in the US (instead of Brazil), but why are the Rossi's seldom mentioned?

I'm no expert but it seems to me that you might have hit on the reasons: H&R has a long history behind them, are mostly better finished, and are made in the US (instead of Brazil). It's good to know about the Rossi equivalents though.

ok 870 is probabally the most popular production shotgun ever!! how can you go wrong with that? also 870 receiver is steel the 500 is aluminum... need I say more?

I have handled and shot rossi I like the feel of a H&R better and like already said finish is better on the gun Plus American made is always gets my nod over off shore products I would buy a rossi before anything made in china or russia
:banghead: why is it every time we discuss single shot some one :cuss: starts with the pump or auto stuff :banghead:
Only thing I can figure is since they are not good enough shot to hunt with a single shot they think no one else is
For the record I've have seen a lot more broken 870's than broken H&R single shots I am not bad mouthin' 870's(I have one) just more moving parts mean more things that could fail

I like the Rossi singles over the NEF/H&R. They seem better balances and just plain fits better.

As far as recievers, all they really do is keep parts in, the KABOOM is in the chamber. So it doesn't matter if its alloy or steel.

As far as I know, H&R and Rossi are the only companies still making the traditional break-open exposed hammer single shots. Remington sells the Russian-made model (SPR), but they don't have exposed hammers. Winchester, Savage-Stevens, and a bunch of defunct companies all used to make singles, but no longer.

I know there are some expensive single shot trap models, but do any other companies still make basic inexpensive single shots?
