I'm gonna try to get my hands on a new S&W K-Frame sometime soon...probably a Model 10.
Who makes fairly inexpensive (lesser than or equal to $50) good-looking round-to-square butt grips?
Preferably wood, though plastic or rubber will do in a pinch. Also, preferably checkered.

The Model 10 comes with a square butt already, doesn't it? If you are talking about a newly made one, I would urge you to reconsider. There are so many practically brand new condition Model 10s available on the used gun market, and they typically go for less than a current production gun. The old ones are also much better for a number of reasons, and almost all of them have square butts. Just check out your local pawn shops and gun stores and ask to see what they have in older Model 10s in excellent or near new condition. Heck, even if the blue is worn out, the works are likely perfect, and you will save money if the blue is a little worn out. You will be happy you did. You don't want a self defense handgun with a key lock on it, loaded with MIM parts, do you?

Current Model 10's come with the round butt.

If you find a set of square-butt stocks you like that cover the backstrap (or at least the lower part of it), the bottom and the frontstrap you can use them on a round-butt frame. If you don't find wood stocks that meet you're requirements, Pachmayr make some rubber ones.

$50 is just a tad too tight of a budget on nice wooden conversion grips. Just make it $20 more and a whole world of nice grips will open up to you. Although if you want them checkered, you may have to spend a bit more than even that. One thing I would suggest is posting a WTB ad here on THRs buying/trading accessories subforum. Many of us have extra stuff around.

Edit: You might want to check here http://www.grips4guns.com/revolver/smithwesson/klconversion.html
Geoffrey over at grips4guns is very helpful on the phone and they have some beautiful checkered wooden grips for about $75 , that make good alternative to hogues. Expect to wait a couple weeks though because they are currently backed up a little.

Take a look at Kim Ahrend's Site. Most revolver grips, including round-butt to square-butt conversion, are $60. All my S&W's wear Ahrends grips.

They're the best grips I've ever owned. Two examples of Mr. Ahrends' work:

Cordia wood (L frame round butt to square butt conversion)

6171.jpg
Maple wood (also an L frame round butt to square butt conversion)

Thanks for compliment... the 686 is a "six" while the 617 is a ten-shooter. Almost too fun to be legal!

The nice thing about Kim's shop is you can call and ask if they've got some particularly nice stock on hand of whatever you want before you order. If you want, say, a darker shade of Goncalo Alves or a lighter shade of Rosewood or just something with a particularly striking grain pattern, you can call and ask about it; they may not have what you want, but if they don't they'll tell you. Of course if they do, they'll set some aside for your order. They're just great people to work with in general and their product is spot-on in my book.

Did I mention my .45 wears panels from Ahrends too?
