I got my ar yesterday!! a rock river arms a2,but i did not realize till i got home and was drooling over,er i mean inspecting it,that it has a dpms upper. Is this normal,or was this a "built "rifle?
Not that it matters,it functions perfectly,i'm happy, just courious.

It MAY have been a "built" rifle, or it could have just been a RRA complete lower, and a DPMS complete upper... Whatever it was, it didn't come "from the factory" that way.

As long as it's reliable, and you like it... :D

RRA, like every other manufacturer, sells component lower units. Even if sold as a complete rifle the owner can play mix-and-match. I have a DPMS lower on a DPMS upper bought 8 years apart. I have a Bushmaster lower with a RRA upper that used to have a DPMS upper. Go figure.

Don't fret, shoot the gun and see how well it shoots. DPMS and RRA buy from the same jobbers and pick largely from the same pool of parts. I've not noticed any differences myself.

On the bottom of the barrel it is stamped "DPMS .223 1-9"
Maybe i assumed to soon, but i fiqured that ment it was a dpms upper.

Yeah, RRA didn't send it out with a DPMS upper... And last I heard, RRA used Wilson barrels.

Was it new or used?

It is new,i know the dealer well, and he stands behind what he sells,so i was not worried about it.
I never thought to look at the bottom of the barrel, found the DPMS stamp while cleaning it to go shoot it for the first time.It shoots excellent.
The RRA site does say they use wilson barrles, but i wondered if this is what they did during the y2k farce.
Thanks for all the replies.

One more question.
How worrysome is the .223/5.56 situation?
Some i have talked to say"5.56 is just a tad hotter", while other act as if you would be trying to shoot a 44 mag out of a 1911!

In the VAST majority of cases, the two are completely interchangeable. You might run into issues if you handload or use specialized bullets seated out further, but don't worry. There is a wealth of back-and-forth argument about this but I think that 1500 angels can dance on the head of a pin.

If it was in fact "NEW", I'd give it back and ask for a complete RR rifle, unless you got a really good price for it and don't expect any warranty problems. Having a DPMS upper with a RR Lower will definitely affect resale value in the future and may voild any warranties with Rock River.

Good Shooting
