When he passed, my Grandfather left me his Remington 722 in .257 Roberts. This gun accounted for an awful lot of hill country white tails and a few feral dogs attacking lambs and calves during the decades he used it.

He had a (cheesy) Tasco 4x32 scope mounted decades ago after his original Weaver 4x was damaged.

The scope mounts are some insanely complex ones from Stith with adjustments in the mounts.

The gun shoots ok (not lights out by any stretch!) but I would like to rescope the rifle with a better scope. I have a couple of questions before I do.

Are these mounts really difficult to undo and reuse?

If I do swap, would the holes be custom-fit to these mounts or were they using factory drilled scope mounting holes?

I would hate to have to have this thing redrilled/tapped for other bases if it’s too much of an issue to reuse these mounts.

Thanks for any suggestions.

That's the coolest thing I've seen in some time. Even has what looks to be a fold down rear aperture sight.

As long as that Stith mount accepts 1" tube scopes, I'd get some measurements of the replacement scope you're interested in to make sure it will fit. Then I'd mount it up and just adjust the new scope from its own turrets.

I wouldn't adjust the Stith mount unless you couldn't get your scope adjustments in range.

Gotta admit, I don't know how the front and rear rings come off unless they just "spring" around the scope tube once the top clamp hardware is removed.

In case you don't have a paper manual, I stumbled across this. Not sure if it's exactly for what you have or not.
Sweet, thanks for the link.

As you can see these are a lot more involved than twisting Leupold rings into their bases and zeroing with the scope dials.

The rear sight was removed and a Stith dovetail blank was installed, since the gun and mounts are older than I am I’ll guess this was done when it was originally scoped. I often put folding rears onto my lever guns with peeps in case something goes wrong, but these mounts are so involved that if the scope takes a dive I think that hunting day (or trip if I don’t have a backup gun) is done.

Stay safe.

I’d start by cleaning the gun very well barrel and all....then if it were me I’d pull that scope and mounts off and go with a more traditional setup like weaver bases and rings and see what that gets you as always

Those mounts are great! Over engineered, but pretty cool for the age/era of them. I looks to me like the protector bands are not correctly placed over the cone screws. Loosening the center band and pushing the scope forward looks like it will put those outer bands directly over the cones. A period Redfield or Weaver 2x or 4x scope with tube diameter objective would look really nice.

Originally you didn't adjust the scope to zero the rifle, you adjusted the mounts. I haven't seen many, and none like that. But it isn't really necessary with that scope.

When that mount was made most scopes did not have an optically centered reticle.
I will say it looks just a bit more complex in adjustment compared to a B&L Balvar though.
I would use the adjustments to keep the scope adjustment somewhat centered.

I'll bet the mounts use Remington's scope base holes.
If you're looking to move it for a Leupold rings and mount set, just say the word and I'll
buck up for it, you pick what you want.
I've got an early Leupold 3x9 that does not have a self centered reticle needing a mount.

Thanks for sharing the nice photos of a classic rifle/caliber as well.

I'll have to wait until after my truck registration check clears if I want to get a Leupold. I'm getting raked over the coals this month by the DMV because my 15 year old pickup left me, the family and the trailer stranded in the desert one time too many and I had to replace it with a new one last April.

I have a modern Weaver that I think I'll drop in... if I can figure out how to undo the rings o_O

Thanks for the kind words, I wish the gun could talk and tell me stories of the deer hunts my Grandfather took it on. :)

Stay safe.

Like others have said, the history of this rifle combined with the coolness of the mount is unbelievable!

I get your truck woes. My truck is almost 20 years old, but I don't want to make basically a monthly house payment for the renewal fee on a new truck. It is just crazy here right now.

Thanks for sharing the pics of that rifle and if you scope it and shoot it please post an update.

Reminds me of individually adjustable pushrods in a Panhead engine....too much adjustability!

WHY would one use that mount with a scope that has turrets?

Now an old K4 or K6 Weaver? That would look nice in that mount on that 722.

Last gun show I was at I passed on a 722 in 257 for $350 I have my dumb moments, think that's all the money I had for the week and need money to get to work or something.

Oh, the guns I had to pass on buying for those reasons.

Modern optics are soooo much superior to the old. The old and clean K series El paso Weavers have their charm and yes a K6 thru K12 would look nice but finding a clean one is difficult and expensive if reconditioned and still not optically up to a new Leupold VX1 . The 722 Remingtons are notoriously accurate if bedding is clean and tight and relieved as necessary . The barrels were legendary , mostly ,and triggers can be refined easily. That mount is a good one if it has all its parts working well and set up correctly. Having a mount which allows a scope with it's internal adjustments centered is a big plus .
Good luck with that California Draconian registration scam. They of course use the $ to keep the roads in such great shape :(
Ill drag my former .222 722 out for a picture. It is now rechambered to .223 Wylde and I used a 15 year old Leupold Varix 3 Long Range scope on it from a Rem 700 PSS .308 I had laying around in $60 Dead Nutz Game Reaper mount/ring combo which are bombproof ,
