Ruger 10/22 Issues

If there is anyone familiar with the 10/22 I am having an issue I could use some help with.

Replaced the stock trigger, hammer and sear as well as magazine release and auto bolt release. Also replaced the bolt handle with a Power Custom extended bolt handle.

Took it to the range and immediately had an issue - when I pull the trigger it sounds like the firing pin/bolt is striking several times on one shot. Tried it again and I believe either a round or case exploded in the chamber (previously checked to make sure the chamber/barrel was empty). Smoke was coming from the chamber and down and out through the trigger and I found a piece of the bullet on the table next to me.

Not really sure what's wrong with it as I am fairly new to the 10/22 and gunsmithing game. Any ideas?

Wow... Ok, do this: Pull all of that crap out of your gun. Clean and oil the appropriate parts of the gun and the factory components. Get out your Ruger 10/22 manual and put that thing back together stock. Confirm that you put everything back together correctly. Then, over the next couple of days, take the gun apart and put it back together a bunch of times, confirming that the gun works each time.

I would advise that you actually spend some time at the range shooting the gun in factory setup. Figure out what you do and don't like about the gun, what needs to change, and what would actually grow on you over time.

I'm guessing you didn't re-install the bolt assembly correctly. Are you familiar with how the recoil spring and guide rod go in? Also... What kind of Stinger ammo were you using??

Rick - I wasn't aware that installing drop-in parts in a Ruger 10/22 required the assistance of a competent gunsmith. Thank you for comment and I will take it's usefulness into consideration.

Luke - I appreciate the advice. I have owned the Ruger for some time and have played with it in stock form for the entire time I owned it. I have taken apart and put back together the insides of the trigger group assembly as well as the barrel, bolt, bolt handle, edge extractor and stock several times - I bought this gun specifically to modify it and to learn a little about the insides of guns, since it was only a $175 gun. The trigger assembly works just fine.

I believed I was familiar enough with the bolt assembly to simply change out the bolt handle for one with a little more length - I made sure it was seated correctly and work appropriately before I took it to the range.

I am not interested in putting the stock parts back in - I am interested in modifying this firearm and learning more about it.

Woooops! Didn't see where you did all the replacements.

Question: When you retracted the bolt was there a spent case? Pieces?

The "piece of bullet" is weird. Firing out of battery isn't common but it happens some. Usually the nose of the round is inside the chamber and the case blows. Brass fragments inside the action and maybe a plugged barrel.

You stated you "tried it again". Did you eject that first round that went click? Was there any indication of a firing pin strike?

Last question. Has anyone worked on the bolt/headspace?

You've got to be kidding.

Dantheman, what sort/brand of kit did you use? 10/22s are kind of like AR15s in that there is lots of stuff out there for them. Some of it is good stuff and some of it isn't. Some good products with some manufacturers don't play well with stuff from other manufacturers.

I would first recommend that you tear it all apart and put it back together again using a schematic to make sure that everything goes in the way it's supposed to. Take careful note of the springs and plunger. After you get it back together, dry fire it a few times and see if you still get that sensation of a double strike occurring.

did you change out the barrel?

if so did you make sure it had a sporter chamber or a benz/match chamber?

what ammo did you use?

if you had out of spec ammo (or just a really bad round) in a tighter chamber you could have had a cartridge failure

that would mean that nothing you did in the list of things you modified would have been the culprit

the multiple strikes on the firing pin is a mystery to me

you didnt change anything in the bolt so the firing pin has the same mass as it always had

is the hammer/sear valquertson?

i dont see a target hammer being heavy enough to rebound multiple times when fireing unless you are using one for either the 17hmr kit or the 22mag (i dont think the mag will fit but never tried)

check the barrel and chamber again for obstructions or bulging or anything and put the stock trigger back in for a few tests

I never liked the sear/trigger kits ive always gone with either a volqu or a kidd trigger pack
