Bought a new 10/22 a few weeks ago, and I like it for the most part, but there's one problem I've noticed. The magazine sometimes sits a little low, causing FTFs. Usually I'll nudge the magazine upward and the round will feed the rest of the way. So my question is, how common of a problem is this, and will simply getting another magazine cure it?

Hello, if you are using the stock magazine and notice it is not seating firmly up into the magazine well. Then I would check to see if there is anything blocking the thin flat areas on either side of the top of the mag where it seats against the receiver. If there is anything more than a very small amount of play when the mag is fully seated, there may be a bur or some other material not allowing the mag to seat correctly, even if it fully engages the locks. Since your gun is new, it's not likely it would be build up of grime or powder residue. Beyond that I would say try another factory mag to see if that cures it.

I have not heard of any systemic issues (magazine not seating) like this on the 10/22's. But the other post is correct that all semi-autos are finicky (10/22 is one of the best) about feeding certain types of ammo. My 2 cents:)

If it's a new 10/22 (or any new semi-auto) one favor you can do yourself is just run a thousand rounds of HV ammo through it right off the bat. If it won't feed with different brand of ammo, especially something with a roundnose profile, I'd try another magazine. If that doesn't work, I'd call Ruger and make them fix it.
And if the magazine is the problem, I'd call Ruger and make them send you a good magazine. It should work right out of the box. If it doesn't, hold them accountable and make them spend the money to make it right.

Check the hole in the mag catch plunger while you're looking at the rest of it.

Doesn't sound like ammo to me.

On the front of the mag is a slight cylinder protrusion. On the back of the mag is a small nipple. The front protrusion slips into a hole and the rear nipple depresses the mag release and also slips into a hole. The mag should not hang low. It is not fitting all the way in or its a Friday gun;).

Lock the action back, and with good light, see if these two functions are happening. If they are slipping into their respective holes, then either a new mag is needed or the Friday gun applies.

There is front to back play in all the 10-22s but the mag should be very snug up and down.
