I like that style w/stock barrels better than this system. Why did they quit making them ?

Agreed -- the beauty of the Packer system was that it could take any standard 10/22 barrel.

I wish I knew why they quit making it. One thought I had is that Butler Creek made the Packer at the height of the AWB, when folding buttstocks became verboten. The Packer achieved a collapsible configuration without violating the AWB. When the AWB sunsetted and the folding stocks came back with a vengeance, maybe BC lost too much market to them to be worth producing?

The other possibility that occurs to me is that the Packer stock (with its ingenious and mechanically sturdy but relatively complex design) simply became to expensive for BC to manufacture, especially at a price point that would compete with the folding stocks (noted in the paragraph above)?

Just a couple of thoughts...

.

I have two 10/22's both with nice stocks and the metal trigger group. I was thinking of buying a folding stock for one of them.

I think I like this a whole lot better since I have no intention of changing the barrel.

Smaller package than a folding stock. I'm not a big fan of pistol gripped rifles. And the lack of cheek weld inherent on a folding stock doesnt turn me on either.

This would go well with my double barrel 12ga. I want one.

Gungenie doesnt have any.
Gunbroker has a few. Only one with a 'buy now price' of $389. Yikes.

Turners has them $299.00

This may have just answered the question of what will I buy next.

Like others I am rediscovering the fun in shooting the lowly 22. What is the out the door price?
Just got an email from my local shop. They just got a batch in and are selling them for $299.99

MDauben, we apparently frequent the same shop. If I had the money, I would be at Larry's tomorrow morning. Not having a job sucks.

Any if the takedown mechanism can be retrofitted to an older receiver? It would require a new barrel and stock, so maybe it would be just as cheap to get a new one.

Take some comfort in the fact that it woundn't matter if you did have money. I checked to day and they are already sold out of the half-dozen they got in just yesterday.

You would think one of the biggest Ruger dealers in the country would get more than 6. I think they could have sold 60 pretty easily.

Turners Sporting Goods email news letter ad advertised "only 700 avaiible".

Update to post #10:

Spotted one at my nearest LGS, I was impressed enough with the takedown/assembly mechanism that I snapped it up despite being stainless/synthetic. Having so many 10/22 magazines and parts already helped, this is #4 and will be getting tinkered with for sure.

I'm hoping mine will arrive at the LBS shortly. He had already sold out his allotment and was trying to get a bunch more.

The one complaint I had about my Marlin Papoose was that it's felt toy-like. Great for packing, not so much for shooting - though it has proven to be more accurate and reliable than every 10/22 I've owned. The new take-down 10/22 is more than a pound heavier and I would suspect better proportioned for an adult. I'm very optimistic about this rifle.

I don't much care for the 10/22 stock open sights. I'll probably go with the Tech-sights or the Williams.

Love the idea and technology...looks better than the standard collar threaded joint. Now, why did they send out a memo that they were 1,000,000 gund behind and not taking any orders the day before they announce a gun that "everyone" will want?

I remember shooting the prototype ROA at Friendship, going home and ordering five...for our shooting group of MLs. Took 18 months to get them. The P85, named after the year of introduction...another long wait.

I'm glad that sales are so good. We're having trouble getting anything that our customers need at the shop. People are buying at record rates. That's good. Replacements are coming in at record slow rates (60 Solos sold, six received in 15 months).

Looking better and better.

So 2 questions.

1. Have they done this thing right? Takedowns have been around for a long time. Did Ruger get this one right?
2. Does it come apart (the bolt, etc) just like the regular model? For cleaning? That is for me one of the big attractions of the 10/22...that it can be disassembled almost as easy as an AR or a Glock or whatever...almost.

This thing has "BUY ME" written all over it.

the one i saw had a very tight lockup, it was quick and easy but the store was asking 406otd and for the money i couldnt justify that(not big on semi autos anyhow). for 299? yah i probably would have bitten on it.

I sold all of my first group of them over the weekend. The price was $339. Another batch coming in this week. The price should settle down after they are around for awhile.

While some things like kel-tecs come to mind for hard to find guns that will continue to demand high prices if thats what you want these 10/22's should not be a problem.

The rifle is so easy to take the barrel off and on. It has a knurled adjustment nut on the front of the reciever that once set lets you take the barrel on and off with the proper barrel tightness. With its carbine length barrel its a real winner.

I guess you were right. According to their website, they got another 200 guns in since last week. I stopped by last night on my way home from work and picked one up and they had at least 40 of them stacked behind the counter (I assume the rest were still in back). Still $299.99 plus tax. Very impressed with the solid feel of the gun, the ease of break down and assembly, and the balance was very good, too. Can't wait to take it out for some shooting this weekend.

1 - Looks like it. I think most people whine too much about monir quirks of takedown rifles in the first plae, and Ruger addressed most of those whines.
2 - If you know how to take down a regular model, you know how to do this one. The only difference is that it is a bit odd to hold just the receiver in your hand a one point, and that you can now easily clean the bore from the chamber end

10/22 td

Got mine Ruger 10/22TD, BUT I WISH RUGER had an IQ tune-up and offered a THREADED BARREL...

Can't wait to compare my Papoose vs this Ruger...

I wish I could find one local. Can't seem to find one here in SE Michigan.
