Afternoon Gents,

My buddy's brother in law that I met last night asked me to take a look at his Ruger because he was having trouble taking it apart. Having never owned one I said I could look and see what's going on and if I couldn't figure it out I would ask my online encyclopedia, i.e. this forum.

Here is what's going on, my buddy's nephew had the pistol cocked and I guess started to pull out the takedown lever. Now the pistol won't come apart.

When you pull the bolt back without the mag, it stays locked back, hitting the slide lock does nothing, you can push the bolt back in with your hand but it doesn't seem to cock it as when you pull the trigger nothing happens. With the bolt closed, you can pull down the lever and start to swing the assembly out but only a small amount and it won't budge. Anyone have any tips?

I looked at a few disassembly videos and have an understanding of how to take it apart but the swinging out of the spring assembly is where the problem is.

Sounds like the hammer strut is out of the mainspring cup inside the mainspring housing (takedown lever & backstrap), but the hammer is still cocked.

With the takedown lever unlatched, try tipping the gun muzzle down and pulling the trigger while tapping the muzzle on something solid.
(it will have to have an empty magazine in it if it has the newer magazine safety)

What you are trying to do is uncock the hammer to get the strut out of the way, so you can finish opening the takedown lever.
