I was debating which was better with a friend at a local gun shop ruger .44 deerfield carbine or ruger m77 stainless bolt action in .44mag ,what do y'all think, thought i would throw it out there and get a few opinions.

There are BOTH at a local shop! Talk about a wealth of choice here. Can't help much with the decision though.

I have shot the Deerfield, and it is a cool gun, but for hunting, I think I would go with the bolt gun. Hmm, I don't know. See, no help at all. :)

The Ruger 77/44 isn't a true M77 bolt action. The front half of the bolt has twin extractors, and doesn't rotate. No Mauser claw-type extractor. The rear half rotates, and that is where the lock-up to the action occurs. This may not be any better than the M1 style locking lugs which are near the breach.

Magazines for both are rotary 4-rd, and are fairly reliable. However, if you get a "sticky" one, you can get fail to feed.

I don't know when Ruger changed the twist rate on the .44 Mag carbines. The original tubular magazine carbines had a 1/38 twist rate, and the new 77/44 has a 1/20 twist rate. Supposedly, the faster twist rate will allow it to better stabilize heavier bullets (>240gr).

The 77/44 is now stainless/synthetic, whereas the Deerfield was only offered in blued/walnut. If you insist on hunting in driving rain (like I do), there may be some advantage to the current version of the 77/44.

The 77/44 can be easily retrofitted with aftermarket sears/springs, making reliable 2-1/2lb trigger pulls a simple, no-gunsmith task.

The 77/44 is slower on follow-up shots. This can be a real big problem if you're hunting hogs (I've been told), but maybe not such as issue for blacktail deer.
