Have a NIB RAR 556. Shot it for first time. 3 out of 10 federal 193 wouldn’t fire. South African shot 100% in it. The federal shot fine in my mini 14. I shoot federal exclusively for years in bulk. It was 28 degrees and I had the bolt oiled heavy for break in. I had installed an Anarchy bolt handle. Fit perfect. I see there is no after market at all for a heavier spring. Headspace is perfect. I’m going to unlube it and put factory handle back on it. Never shot it with factory handle. I’m really thinking it’s the hard primers. I’m do not want to send it back to ruger. I’ve searched there response to this issue with RAR rifles. Basically says to shoot different ammo and want to swap out rifles. I love this rifle. Nice groups with cheap bulk ammo. I’ve chatted with loonwolf. Gave me good advise. Says to pick yalls minds also. Thanks WarDawg

I passed out early last night, and still havent taken my RA apart and looked for possible points of issues or fixes. Ill do that before work today (since i took the morning off to stand in line at the post office for fake sugar......).

I know we talked about it, but I forgot to ask, but did you happen to check firing pin protrusion?

I would call Ruger. They have great customer service and will probably have you send it back so they can fix it. I have done that with two Rugers.

I have two of the 7.62x39 versions and all we shoot is Russian ammo. I have not had a single miss-fire. It will be interesting to see what happens this weekend. I hope you get it figured out quickly.

I just measured both of mine, the protrusions at .040, and i noticed that when the pins all the way forward the cocking piece doesn't reach the bottom of the channel and can wiggle.

Ok it was killing me to not know. Movie night with wife and then went down and checked. It is about .045 I put the factory handle back on for now. The only thing I saw was when the firing ping is in the fire spot the last maybe 1/16 of travel is a snug spot. Not terrible . But not free floating with ease. This is bolt handle off with me placing the firing pin in it and sliding by hand acting as if it was striking a case. The tight spot seems to be at the far end near the dust cover. I’m going to work it with a Dremel flapper wheel. Not going to remove metal . Just to smooth it. Machining marks and such. Tomorrow maybe. Getting late and wife wonders what I’m doing in a cold basement. They don’t understand man issues. Lol.

At least yours doesn't throw kids out in the garage with you and say "watch em!"......:D

So i thought i was clever and went to see if an American long action/magnum firing pin spring was heavier than a short action springs.....Its not they are exactly the same....
The only part that's different is the firing pin itself is longer by about 1/2"

the only difference in the spring is the long actions about .05" shorter, wire dia is .062, coils counted out the same....i forgot how many...anyway, no joy there.

Extremely great info. How hard is it to knock out that little roll pin and to get it all back together. It seems to be under a little spring pressure.
Very little, its really just the roll pins tension keeping it in there. Ill see which punch size it is tomorrow, its the second one in my PSA punch set tho.

You do need to remove what ever wedge you used ro tension the spring for removal, and getting that back in takes some force to press down rhe spring durring reassembly, but otherwise its pretty painless.

The firing pin system really a rather easy to work with set up. The cocking piece threads onto the rear of rhe firing pin and all that little pin does is keep the cocking piece from unscrewing all the way. One of my first Americans didnt even have the pin in place and it held just fine.
Once the pin is removed just unscrew rhe cocking piece and it comes apart. There IS some tension on the spring when the cocking piece fully releases, so hold the front of thr pin and the cocking piece, but its minimal unlike so many other designs.

Reassembly is easier than most others also. You just gotta get the cocming piece started then you can just screw it all the way on and out the pin back in.

I coved the firing pin assy with layout bluing. Saw potential areas. Drill motor and scotch brite . All the way to the firing pin hole itself. Came back with crocus paper. It’s more of a polishing paper. Hit it with my drill with a stick extension. Did NOT change anything. The last thing it could be was firing pin going through bolt face hole. Lightly polished and it slides smoother than a babies ass now . All potential trouble areas have been checked and signed off as good to go . Need to go to range this weekend. Fingers crossed. Thanks for all the reply’s. 49CF7930-4EA0-47F9-AF23-B913B4D343FF.jpeg

Howdy,
Did this resolve the issue you were having? Thanks

Had same issue with RAP. Had to give away 12 boxes of ammunition. It shoots expensive ammunition without trouble. It will be sold sooner than later.
