Well in a post about a week ago I asked which I should get and I finally decided on the 6.5 inch barreled stainless steel version of the Ruger Blackhawk. I was wondering what type of ammo would be best for range time and what should be used on coyotes. Also I need a holster for it, it will get wet often so is a leather holster from rugers website a good choice or should I go with a Nylon holster. I don't want to pay over 100 bucks for the holster unless I have to. Thanks.

I'm guessing 44mag?
Winchester white box 240gr JSP's are hard to beat for easily available general purpose ammo.
The Remington UMC 180gr HP load is downright impressive to touch off. Not fun at an indoor range.
Well, pretty fun lol.

As far as holsters, I've always liked bianchi. I've never carried a blackhawk, so I'll defer to someone with more experience.

In that case, I've always liked the Federal 125gr or 158gr JSP loads. Both were excellent in my .357's! Great all around loads.
I've been playing with the 140gr XTP and H110, if I was looking for premium ammo, I'd probably look for a factory load with that bullet. I'm guessing Hornady should be able to help.

Still no help on holster choices however.

For my Blackhawk I got a cheap Uncle Mike nylon for... I dunno, $15 or $20. It has worked fine on the rare occasions I've carried the Blackhawk on my belt.

(I have nothing against carrying SA revolvers, it's just that a 45 with a 7.5" barrel gets heavy after a while.)

I would go with a Bianchi leather holster but they are a bit pricey at around $100 or so. Same with something from El Paso Saddlery; very nice quality but a bit on the expensive side..Ruger carries a decent line of leather holsters for most of their single action revolvers. There's one for a 6.5" barreled Blackhawk for $42.95 on their ShopRuger website.

I have a Ruger Blackhawk and I use a $20 nylon Uncle Mike's holster as well. Holds it tight, even with the buckle unstrapped when I am in bear territory. I looked into the really cool leather holsters, but the price was not worth it to me. I never really saw a downside to nylon over other materials, but I also do not have expensive taste or wear my status on my belt.

For ammo, UMC has .38 special bulk boxes relatively cheap for range stuff. For hunting loads, I have always been partial to Buffalo Bore. But the possibilities are almost endless when it comes to .357 mag

In 1967 my mom gave me a Ruger Blackhawk .357 Magnum 6" for my 21st birthday. I wanted a holster and I wanted one that fit the gun's motif. So I got me one of these in natural tanned leather. At the time, I paid about $35 for the whole rig.

Times (and prices) have changed and Lawrence is still mighty proud of their goods. My son has both the gun and the belt/holster rig now and that's the way it should be.

Uncle Mike do the job and are inexpensive and Simply Rugged make a very good holster. But for a SA I would go with a classic design from Graveyard Jack.

Thanks for the Vintage Gunleather link. Great stuff as I am especially fond of the old George Lawrence holsters.

Sixguns go with leather imo.
All you need is to mink oil your rig up and you are good to go.
