Ruger Gunsite Scout 308

Got to fondle one yesterday. It's a nice enough rifle but the single stack mag sticking out like a wart really bites. I'll continue to work up my vz-24 action, 19" barrel, 7x57, scout mounted reflex/red dot sight scout like rifle instead. Having the ammo all inside the stock is a really big plus for carrying it any length of time. The box mag on the Ruger would bite really hard all day long.

First pic is the GSR next to my 80lbs puppy

2nd is just the GSR

3rd is my bushnell 6-18 in the scout position-which doesn't work at all LOL

The 3 round poly mag sits almost flush with the stock.

I went with the traditional scope as well. One of the most appealing features of this rifle for me is the barrel length and contour, almost seems made for a suppressor. Hopefully I'll have mine this year if YHM ever ships the damn thing to my dealer.

RANGE REPORT: After mounting a redfield 3x9 I took the GSR out for some paper hole punching. WOW this rifle is amazing I have never had one out the box under a 20' barrel shoot llike this. Shot a total of 26 rounds and minus the 1st 3 which I walked onto target every round went where I wanted it too. Here is some pics of my Sight in target 5 and 3 round groups all at 100yrds.

Wow! Looks like you got a keeper. What ammo were you shooting? I have heard that these guns are getting good accuracy, but pictures like that help back that claim up. I wouldn't worry to much about the bolt. I bet it will get a tad slicker the more you work it.

That's some fine shootin'! I handled one yesterday and had a hard time giving it back. Fortunately, it was at Gander Mt. so they wanted about $150 too much.

I am running the Leupold M8 on my Ruger Scout but LOVE the Leupold 2-7X for a conventional mounting, almost as fast as the fwd. mounted with the option of dialing it up for long shots.

PS If'n ya need a Ching Sling, PM me...I have a pile on hand!

Another great product for Strum & Ruger.:fire::cool: If I didn't own Remington 660 I would surely buy one.

Because a low powered scope mounted conventionally just plain works better. The purpose of mounting forward was to make loading with stripper clips possible. With a detachable magazine gun there is no reason to use the less effective forward mounted optics.
It was also to allow for fast moving snap shots, something I can do just about as well with an illuminated reticle 1X-4X set on 1X.

The 3x9 mounted conventionally is working very well. I had it on 3 power and tracked some squirrels in the back yard I'm pretty sure I could hit one on the move. It reminds me of an M4 with an Acog.

Among the Gunsite Scout Rifle's virtues is the ease of mounting whatever the user wants, needs or is comfortable with, or not mounting anything on it and just using the irons which are pretty good too.

I wish they would make it with an 18.5" tube and ditch the flash hider.

I was going to post a new thread on the Ruger Gunsite Scout, but this says it all.

I want a .308 without being "just" a bolt-action hunter, and without spending $1500-2500 on a nice semi-auto battle rifle. I don't mind an AR15 with a 16" barrel, but that is just too short for a .308. The M1A Scout would be a good pick too as it has the right barrel length, but lacks the ease of mounting a scope...and then there is the price again.

Are there 18" barrels available for the Ruger?

The purpose of mounting forward was to make loading with stripper clips possible. With a detachable magazine gun there is no reason to use the less effective forward mounted optics.
So true. Yet another reason the Ruger Gunsite misses the mark it so tried to hit.

The export model solves the problem. Too bad it's almost impossible to get.
