I’ve got a Ruger LCP 2 in .22lr and I really like it. Initially it had some teething problems, but I changed out the factory springs with some aftermarket versions and it runs like a champ. I do occasionally use it for carry around my house and out to the UDF for milk and such. The capacity of the pistol is nice, and the weight and dimensions of the gun make it a dream to carry in a pocket. I also have a Ruger LCP Max which sees a lot of carry time. The .22lr version pairs nicely with the more expensive and higher recoiling .380.

I recommend buying the LCP .22lr for all the reasons you mention EXCEPT as a kids training gun. It’s small and the sights are pretty tiny. A Smith M&P .22 compact or Ruger Wrangler would probably be a better option. Maybe even a Ruger Bearcat!

if it were a shrunken sr22, which i love, i would have kept the lcp22lr.
Good answer. I rented an SR22 a few years ago, and I thought it was terrific. Too bad they weren't able to reproduce that in the LCP.

Of course, "they" say that the smaller a a Browing short-recoil type auto pistol gets and the lighter the ammo, the harder it is to make it work right.

The LCP .22 makes a great trainer for the centerfire LCPs, and it shares a trigger with the newest version.
Unhappily, have tried the newest iteration; the new trigger is more strikerish, but bites my trigger finger at every shot. Haven't found the Type IIs to be especially reliable, either, and had a dead trigger on one.
So I'm back to an original LCP; that model has never failed me.

I do not claim to be a good self defense gun . But for all the nay sayers the FBI records claim around half of the murders are committed with a 22 . I'm looking at this gun for a light pocket gun for around the yard. I'm 1000% more likely to have to shoot a critter . And if I would need to use a 22 for defense I can shoot under pressure

@Great Scot
Well I got another LCP Max, after you swindled out of my first one! LOL. And now I have the LCP Lite Rack as well. And for all the reason you have stated, cause UDF be having some serious thugs hanging out for that free second dip!

I NEVER thought I would be excited about buying decent hi velocity 22lr for $4 a box, but I am. Now to try it out and break it in.

I just bought one tonight. Toy, and reasons stated above . I have a couple Glock 10mm's if I'm. Some where I consider high threat. I carry a Glock 42 or 26 most of the time out and about.
I didn't start out to be this way but all my rimfire handguns are Ruger and all my center fire handguns are Glock

I started my children both around age 6 with a savage cub bolt action .22lr. This is a child sized .22lr rifle. My club has a rimfire rifle range with metal knock down targets.

When they got older we started with a Smith & Wesson model 34 .22lr revolver. Then a browning buckmark.

When they were 11 and more experienced we went to 1911, and Smith n frames in .45 acp.

Small pocket pistols with poor sights and a heavy trigger are not good for teaching children to shoot and handle firearms safely.

Bought the Lite Rack this week. Tried about 40 rounds of Federal Punch and Mini-Mag's.

Couldn't get through a magazine without at least a couple FTF's, and had about 5 light strikes throughout.

Feeding might be a matter of break-in, but light strikes won't improve with use, so it went back to Ruger the next day.

I'm hoping they can make it run, because it shot like a laser when it managed to cycle; very accurate and shootable for such a small pistol.

What kind of mod's are you guys doing to make them run; hammer spring, recoil spring?

I found an aftermarket spring package and had a gun smith change out most of the factory springs. Works like a charm now. A quick google search will get you to a couple aftermarket options. Hope this helps.

I got the LCP II back less than two weeks after sending it off, and it now eats most everything EXCEPT CCI Mini-Mags, which I'll admit is the reverse of how my .22's usually act. It still shoots nicely (for its size and weight) also:

So weird, lol. Most of the picky .22's will usually work with mini mags. My Mark IV is picky, except with CCI generally and especially mini-mags.

All good points. Kinda what I was thinking when I bought mine and I carry it as a BUG sometimes. Easy to shoot weak handed.

Problem is, I just don't trust it completely because of 22lr ammo. Mine does not like Velocitors or Mini Mags but is pretty good with Aguila super extra 40gr round nose.

There's too many better guns, in better calibers to trust a pocket 22. But I agree it's better than a pointed stick probably.
Bizarre. My Rugers do not like Aguila, and run flawlessly with CCI .22.

I have an LCPII but seldom carry it even for back up, The 9MM Hellcat is oh so much better. My Friend, a very experienced shooter carry's his LCP quite a bit as back up. I asked at what distance he thought he was effective at with the LCP. He said with a laugh "About three feet."

I tought my youngest daughter to shoot on a S&W M&P 22 Compact with a compensator. has absolute 0 muzzle rise, and with the 22lr is not that frightening for little ones to attempt to use, she actually loves shooting it and every range day this is her go to.

I dont own any of the LCP 22lr versions, But I do own all three versions of the LCP II in 380, the LCP, LCP II, & LCP MAX.
kids like them , but the recoil is scarry for them as they reported to me they are hard to hold on to with the higher recoil. They do fit kids hands better than an adults, but again the 380 recoil forces her to have to re-adjust her grip after a shot or two even in her smaller hands. Almost as if the powerful recoil and small ability to have anything to truely grip wants to pop it out of her hands more and more each round.

the one pictured below is a treat to shoot, and with 22lr ammo prices its almost an all day treat for her.

As a parent, my only complaint about any of the LCP's is the lack of a manual safety.....As a parent, I prefer the one below in almost every category.

I don't know, I think they can be shot out to 20 feet okay. More if slowly. Certainly can rapid dump in a body sized target at 10-15 feet. I'm not even sure I've ever fired a gun I couldn't do so within 10 feet, so far.

I agree, out to about 20ft is its limit for acuracy. the M&P 22c above is acurate out to about 50ft. and thats with my 12yr old shooting it. lol

I'd like one of the S&W compacts in .22

I bought an LCP .22 when they came out and it's been an impressive little gun. I've been forgetting to shoot it lately, but it's been really a reliable little gun and I am no way a Ruger fan.

I can shoot my LCP II pretty well out to about 10 yards, but that's slow fire. If I had to dump a mag in a few seconds, maybe 10-15 feet.
That sounds about right. That's what I always say, with slow methodical fire, I can fire most decent quality pocket pistols somewhat accurately even out to 10 yards. But, they aren't easy to shoot rapidly and well. But, I can still hit a full sized target quickly within 10-15 feet. 10 feet is pretty close on the range lol.

That's the truth. It feels like "I hope nobody sees me shooting this close."
haha, yeah exactly. But, I don't feel bad about it if a pocket pistol of some kind, or dialing in a new one. Even then, I usually start at 5 yards. Even my Bond Arms derringer I can hit things with at that distance. ;)

dont worry about what the guys thought next to you, I fire every handgun i buy starting at 5 yards, and work my way out as far as I can till the acuracy is lacking. even the worst has shot well at 10 yards. 380, 22lr, 9mm 10mm etc...

Guns and shooting I tell other non gun peeps that its similar to car racing in a sense that the race winning combination is a combination of the driver and his expierence, Vs. his car and its limits.

every gun will have different limits in a different hand Vs. barrel length and the load its firing. many more factors in bothe scenarios, but this helps them get the juest...
