dont worry about what the guys thought next to you, I fire every handgun i buy starting at 5 yards, and work my way out as far as I can till the acuracy is lacking. even the worst has shot well at 10 yards. 380, 22lr, 9mm 10mm etc...

Guns and shooting I tell other non gun peeps that its similar to car racing in a sense that the race winning combination is a combination of the driver and his expierence, Vs. his car and its limits.

every gun will have different limits in a different hand Vs. barrel length and the load its firing. many more factors in bothe scenarios, but this helps them get the juest...
I start at 5 yards too, as even the hardest to shoot handguns in my experience such as derringers I can hit the center of the target at that distance.

However, similarly, the hardest to shoot handguns (derringers) also can't be shot well by most at 10 yards. Truly, they fit the close in gun definition. However, for virtually all other handguns from micro .380's to snubbies, they can be shot at those distances but require some practice.
