I'd read somewhere on the forum that Hornady Critical Defense 45 grain .22 WMR rounds keyholed in a short barrel revolver. I picked some up today and hit the range with my Ruger LCR 22M and really saw no signs that the rounds did anything but travel true to the target at 7 yards.

I'd also have to agree with Hornady's claim of significantly reduced muzzle flash; I would say almost invisible.

The two rounds at 4 o'clock in the 6 and 7 circles were shot by the Range Safety Officer, the rest by yours truly. All at 7 yards, mine were all rapid fire.

I'm quite pleased with the ammo's performance as far as shooting at paper goes, I don't know much about it's terminal ballistics, I suppose it's not inconsequential.

The trigger still stinks, ce la vie.

I'm thinking of picking one up in the near future so thanks for the review. I've heard the trigger is better than on the lr version. Have you tried both to verify if that is true?

i have tried the ruger lcr in 22lr and 22mag as well as the taurus 941 in 22lr and the sw 319 in 22lr. the taurus had an awfully hard trigger pull and rather than fiddle with it, i traded it away. both rugers and the sw are fine and i cant say which brand i like better. at 7 yards all shoot well, spot on. if i had to keep one it would probably be the sw because of slightly longer barrel, sa/da capability and hi viz/adjustable sights. if i were to ccw only then the ruger. i will never have to choose, all are keepers. the larger question is which 22 caliber. i read alot about muzzle velocity differences between 22lr and 22mag out of short barrels. i guess if i could only afford one caliber it would be 22lr. i got the sw pre sandy hook for $500 gently used and the rugers can be had for $450ish new. so in sum, please dont worry about trigger pull with a ruger (or sw). try a taurus 22 and you will understand (btw im very happy with taurus 38, both use and warranty service, so i have nothing against the brand per se). you cant go wrong with any of these fine little 22 tools.

p.s. im glad that this thread didnt fall into the "22 sucks for p.d." line. my g.f. (5'2", 100lbs) tried all my pistols at the indoor range recently (22lr and 22mag, ruger and taurus 38, bersa 380) and the only one she picked up more than once was the ruger lcr22 lr.

Taurus 22 Mag. Disappointment

Unfortunately my new Taurus proved to be a big disappointment. Using Speer 40 gr. Gold Dot ammunition it was impossible to eject the fired brass from the cylinder and the bullets tumbled and keyholed badly at 7 & 10 yards. Groups at 7 yards were 4".

I sent the gun, target, some fired brass and the Speer ammo box back to the factory for repair. I also sent a photocopy of the target and a letter to Mark Kressler, Taurus CEO, so it should prove interesting.

My wife loves the gun and cartridge. Let's see if Taurus can get it right.

For some reason it looks like the .22 mag loves to keyhole. It must take something special to get them right.

The Grendel P30 had keyholing issues, the KT PMR30 has had the same issue, as do several .22 mag revolvers.

I have never experienced .22 Magnum keyholing with my NAA Black Widow, NAA Pug, or S&W 351c. I would suspect a mis-cut barrel crown if keyholing is a problem with several kinds of ammo. If it only happens with one kind...change ammo!

I have a Taurus 941 in .22mag. . It is a very nice gun, but Taurus seems to have a spotty record with guns. I also have a NAA. EARL . It has a 3"Bl.
& the Taurus a 4"Bl. . I have seen no evidence that they keyhole the rounds . They both are accurate. The Taurus having better sights is the one I use for varmints. It has not worked on coons but I just have had it a short time & have not used it for anything else yet so will see how it go's. A good gunsmith should be able to fix the trigger on that Taurus or you may be able to do it your self if you are good with working on things. It is alot like a S&W inside. There are some videos on working on guns online. JAT. Or send it back but don't count on C.S. at Taurus, they don't know how to tell the truth. Good luck whatever you do.

Thanks for the encouraging words about your Taurus 941.

I am not quite sure what to make of the problems with me. Is the brass sticking mean the chambers need to be polished or are the cartridges too high of pressure?

Keyholing would seem to be a barrel issue.

Anyway the fix is on their dime. My recoil sensitive wife loves the gun and the cartridge.

I purchased the Ruger LCR 22 Mag yesterday. The ammo available was Winshester 40 grain HP. Accuracy was very good at 5 yards. I had misfires with the Winchester ammo. The rim appered to have been struck hard. Firing other rounds in this cylinder worked and I could not pin point it to one cylinder. My range hopes to have some CCI in next week. Will be trying that. Byron
