I recently took my Ruger Mark II apart and I am having a lot of trouble getting the mainspring housing back in. IS there some secret to getting it in properly? Every time i manage to get it in, the bolt won't move.
Make sure ther is no cartridge in the chamber, hold gun upright and pull the trigger, tilt the gun up at the front a bit, look in the back for the hammer strut, shake gun if necessary. Make sure the hammer strut hits the dimple on the mainspring housing. Close will not do it. Put a bit of grease on the pin that goes thru the rear of the receiver and it will go easier.
The hammer has to be in the fired position. You may have to fiddle with it, or push it foreword with a small screwdriver while pulling the trigger.
Anyway, once you are sure it is in the uncocked forward position, insert the take-down pin in the receiver, then tilt the gun up until the hammer strut swings back and aligns with the mainspring plunger cup in the housing.
At that point, the housing should close and lock in place.
Don't worry, I probably know 10 or 12 guys including myself that own these guns, and many, like myself, neglected cleaning them for the longest time due to the seemingly complicated break down method for these guns. After doing it a couple of times, it's actually a simple procedure, but I know NO ONE that found it simple the first time. Leave it up to Ruger to make a great gun with an unnecessarily difficult take down procedure.
It's actually not that much different then a Colt Woodsman, or replacing the mainspring housing in a 1911, or ----- Lets just say, lots of other guns are not only harder, but way more complicated!
