Ruger p95 question

I have a P95 Stainless, 15 round mag. Performs flawlessly. I have small hands and have no problem with it. Don't find is bulky at all. It's all what you get used to. It's like riding a bike. Every bike is different, but you adapt to what you're riding. You just have to be patient and find the stance, grip, and style you and your pistol are comfortable with.

have difficulty in racking the slide, it is an excellent choice. The recoil spring has a pull weight of only 11 pounds. For them and others, such as women, it is a fine choice as a house gun.
this is my first post on this forum, and im going to weigh in further on this particular post.

i have a physical disability that while i can handle a gun properly and safely, racking a slide on MOST guns is almost impossible. For the longest time, i thought i was going to have to go with a wheel gun as my first gun purchase (not that thats a bad thing). Well, i went into a gun shop and had some words with the salesman and amde him scratch his head in though for a few minutes, and he came at me with the P95. it was the first gun i was able to rack on my own, not a tactical rack either. I since have become a gun nut and want all sorts of stuff and have felt more confident around guns, and have shot my buddies P89.

I recently (today actually) went and put my first gun on layaway. A SS P95. i cant wait till i finish paying it off. I know a P95 is a budget gun and having one on layaway is almost laughable, but im a guy with a limited budget that just went out and purchased a new car. But, i cant wait. My buddy offered me his P89 with a holsetr and 3 mags for $300, but i turned him down because i wanted the P95 in stainless. I still may take him up on his offer later in the future though.

Congratulations on your pending purchase Random. The Ruger P series are good guns. For me DA/SA takes more practice to learn proper trigger management than some of my other guns but I would not feel lacking at all with a P95.

I wonder if some folks who own a P95 are shy about speaking up for it? I personally don't think it's a bulky weapon and after practicing transition drills, the trigger is quite manageable. I also like the DA first shot since to my mind its the only safety this gun needs, just like a revolver. I really wish they would bring back the decock only model.

I've always been a little confused by that...what is the downside of DA/SA? I mean after you chamber a round you don't have to decock the gun and have that long trigger pull.

The downside, for me, is that I won't carry a DA/SA pistol when the hammer's back. It's a personal preference thing. Additionally, I've found myself to prefer 1911s and XDs, which are both SA. Finally, I just don't want to put forth the effort to "learn" to transition from DA to SA.

You do know that the P95 is not supposed to be carried with the hammer back right?

Me? Yeah, I know that. I also know that some people actually DO carry DA/SA with the hammer back.

A quick story: a few weeks ago I went to a range in the Huntsville area. Brought a 92FS Inox and a XD45 Tactical. Couldn't really hit the proverbial barn with the 92, but was able to chew the center ring out of my targets with the XD45. A discussion ensued late in the session with a guy there, and he suggested that instead of getting rid of the Inox, I should, instead, carry it SA.

I have had myp95dc for several years and have ran several thousand factory and reloaded rounds through it. I have had to replace the recoil springs and I hate the $3.00 little clip on the guide rod that holds the recoil springs. It was used last year to teach my mother to shoot so she could get her carry permit. She liked the low felt recoil and the ease of operation. Mine came with ten round mags and I noticed that now they have 15 round mags. Has anyone tried the 15 round ruger mags in the older p95s. I tried some aftermarket 15 round mags but they were not reliable.

All of the new Ruger 15 round mags will work in the newer and older P95s that came with 10 round mags. You can leaglelly buy magazines for your P95 thru CDNN without any problem.

ojibweindian,

I would definitely not carry a DA pistol with the hammer back...hell, I felt very uncomfortable when I had my glock and one was in the pipe, and it has numerous safeties, as I'm sure you know, no way...never. Do do you still have the 92?

Nope. I traded it for another XD9 Service.

There was nothing "wrong" with the Inox; a few others have shot it with good results. It's a personal preference thing. Trigger reach is too long, don't like slide-mounted safeties, and the whole DA/SA transition thing is a pain in the <blank> to learn. And, I really like XDs.

I traded the Inox away to tcrocker (he's a member here) for another XD9 Service. He's got the pistol on sale now, I believe.

Shy? The P95 is a great pistol, as far as I'm concerned. My opinion, based on my experience:
1. Highly reliable (most important). It digests various kinds of ammo, when my ex-HK P30 choked on some of the same ammo.
2. Nothing wrong with the trigger. Better than that on the P89 and the SR9.
3. Very comfortable grip, but a little too smooth. It will get a little slippery after prolonged shooting. I like the grips to have a little more traction, so I did some homemade stippling of all my P95 grips.
4. The real potential downside is the mag release. For carry, if you ever have to draw in an emergency situation, it can get snagged against your clothing, or whatever in the way, and release the mag. Very bad! So, it's a great car or nightstand gun, but, if you ever decide to carry it, be aware of this.

Shy...wrong word...I meant embarrassed, since it is such an inexpensive gun. I personally don't feel that way but wondering if some do? My P95 is my favorite handgun and I'll sing its praises to the sky.

I like the P-95. I recommend them to anyone looking for a defense gun on a budget. I don't think there is a more reliable gun in that price range, at least from a major manufacturer. I have a "few" pistols, but my P-95 does nightstand duty, as it is the only auto my wife is really comfortable with also. There are better choices out there for concealed carry, but it can be done, lots of people seem to think full size 1911's are the perfect carry gun.

I've had mine (P95DC) over 15 years, shot thousands of rounds out of it without a malfunction I can remember, and still rely on it as my house gun. MidwayUSA has factory 15 round mags (mine came with 10 rounders). It outshot most of the stuff others brought to the CCW class I attended and the double action trigger pull is smooth and the single action pull is crisp. It is bulky though but a Kahr or Taurus rides with me most of the time.

I had a gun digest that had a full review of this gun. It is rugged as crap! mine's strictly a truck gun, inside the door of the house i keep two extra Mags, then two more under the bed... then 2 more in the kitchen... ultimatly I have around 12 mags for this handgun... Nice little gun and you never know when you might need a reliable cheap gun.

I had a P97 that was well made and shot extremely well. I sold it to finance a Colt .357 but intend to buy a P95 somewhere down the road as my main semi-auto. Wonderful value in firearms

Love my P95. Loved paying only $225 for it used even more.

When I first picked up the gun, the large "shelf" on the left side of the gun for the slide stop was off-putting, but I'm never paying attention to that when the sights are on target.

I agree with comments about the slide being easy to rack. I think it has to do with how the safety lever is shapped. Holding the grip in the right hand, it seems like the lever was designed for the index finger and thumb on the left hand to grip on to and pull the slide back.

I think it'd be more popular if it looked more evil, or some movie star decided to flash it ina film.

15 shot mags ??? Huh ?? What ??

This took 10 seconds to find.

That's from the Ruger website order online. $38.48

The SR isn't single action, not a comparo at all.

Bulk schmulk. The slides are all the same thickness. If it aint a micro, then it's everything else.
