Ruger P95 vs. Ruger SR9?

Hey, I am still looking at getting a 9mm handgun, and since this will be my first handgun purchase, I am looking for LOTS of advice:p I am seriously looking at either a P95 or a SR9, the SR9 is a little more money and holds more rounds, but I heard some rumors about the P95 being more reliable? Any advice/opinions are welcome! Thanks!
 
First, congrats on your upcoming first purchase!

I'm guessing you're looking for an all-around pistol - range, home defense? Any concealed carry?

I'd recommend at least shaking hands with each one, and seeing if either feels "right" or "wrong." The grips look a little different, and you might like one's feel over the other.

Then, if possible, try shooting each one.

I think between those two choices you'll be happy either way, but get some hands on time and really check them out.

I've seen a lot of positive comments on both.

If you're looking for concealed carry, the SR9 seems more slimline than the P95.
 
I have an sr9 and I love it, but I've also shot a p95 and enjoyed that too. The sr9 fits my hand better. Get your hands on both, see if your local range has test fires of each and try 'em. But either way I think you will be satisfied.
 
If the P95 is anything like the P89, it would be hard for any pistol to compete on reliability.
 
I agree with the above. Try both out in your hands. I have the p95. It will shoot any ammo I put in it. Never had a single problem in over 2000 rounds. The only drawback that I have seen is that my friends with smaller hands have harder time gripping it. One friend's SR9 seems to have a slightly smaller grip. I'm hoping to add a SR9c to the stable soon.
Either way, you will get a fine pistol.
 
What are you using it for? Their really opposite of each other in nearly every way except reliability. The SR9 is a more fine tuned weapon while the P95 is like a brick with a pistol grip. Not slamming the P95 in anyway, but brick is a good description.... How often do you see a brick not function? :D
 
I own a P95, and I agree with Fonzie's description. It's a quality gun at a great price, and totally reliable, but it's also a brick, and would be more work to conceal than the SR9.

The SR9 is a more modern design - basically Ruger in 2005 (?) catching up to Glock in 1985 - with consistent trigger pull, more capacity and a slimmer overall design.

I would probably favor the SR9 if you don't know what you want. "Safe action" has taken over much of the handgun market and is good for most users.
 
The SR9 will fit smaller hands better. I have owned both and the SR9 would be my choice.

I also like the simplicity of striker fired pistols and not having to convert from double action to single action between the first and second shot on the P95.

Get a feel of both in your hands. The SR9 has slightly better ergonomics BUT size-wise, they are virtually identical. Really - go look at the numbers.

Also, if capacity is your only concern, you can always get Mec Gar 17 round mags for the P95. Mec Gar produces OEM mags for many big name firearm manufacturers. They are one of the best, if not the best, firearm magazine manufacturers in the world. All my SD/HD mags are OEM or Mec Gar.

If it fits your hands, I personally would go for the P95 just because it is a proven workhorse and it less expensive. You can use the dollars saved on practice ammo.
 
I paid $305.00 OTD for my P95. Dealer uses Davidsons, so it has their lifetime warranty,too.
 
ccw.......sr9c best for carry

house/home.....p95 most economical

ccw/home/games.......sr9 best compromise for everything....just how much compromising do you want to do on size and price?
 
P95. Save a few dollars because you'll be looking for your second gun in a few weeks, and it's good to have a little of your budget left :D

Mine is 100% reliable with all ammo I've put through it, and is accurate.

It really wouldn't be a bad idea to get them both in hand; I think the SR9 feels a little better but I like slim grips. The problem with the SR9 is that there are a lot of competitors in the price range; springfield, glock, and a bunch of other good guns are all in that ballpark. That means, go fondle them all and make a decision with complete disclosure. Or buy the P95 and get the best new service handgun in the price range, period.
 
As many have already said, they are both reliable and accurate!
I had to hold them both in my hands to decide. The P95 is a bigger grip then the SR's.
I went with the SR's. Prices are about the same in my area.

The P95 is probably THE most reliable pistol ever made. I know
that's a big statement but I've owned 3(all 100%) and it's the only
pistol I rarely see any complaints on in firearms forums. I currently
have one as my do everything 9mm and I have 100% confidence in it.
They work out of the box and 30,000 rounds later....
 
We have SR-9 sell in Canada, what a great handgun, super slim profile and grip control, very very accurate and well made, But the P95 has a hammer, good for old school like me.

Keep in mind the SR9c does accept the 17 round SR9 magazine...so while you may not wish to carry now, getting the compact model will at least give you that option down the road if you change your mind. (not that the SR9 can't be CCW, it's just the compact is more well suited for the task)
 
I bought an SR9C for IWB carry. I had never really been able to IWB carry my XD or Glock. However, the SR9 is just the right thinness to work. Earlier tonight I shot out an M&P with a SR9 to see which one was the easier shooter - both me and my buddy were more accurate with the SR9.

I think you would enjoy shooting the SR9 more than the P series. The gun is designed to handle the 9mm round well, and soaks up recoil amazingly well. Not so sure about the P95, though the last time I shot one I could feel the slide move when I shot it - looser tolerances.
 
Talk about a win-win situation! Both are outstanding. I love my SR9 but the P95 is probably the best value on the market. Handle them both, then decide.
