Ruger Recall of SR9 Pistols

Mag Safety Now Not Removable!!!

Just got mine back, and my first action was to remove the mag safety block. However, this mod now PREVENTS RE-ASSEMBLY OF THE PISTOL!!! I replaced the mag safety block, and all is well. Aaarrg! :fire: Oh well, it does seem to be vastly improved as far as feel goes. Headin' to the range...

The only disappointment I have in the gun, post recall repair, is the mag release button. I had hoped they would "polish" it up a bit, making it smoother and easier to operate. That did not happen. It is tough as nails to push, and sticky in operation. That may not be a big issue in general carry and target practice, but it makes it a potential problem in IDPA matches that typically require mag changes as a part of the course of fire.

I tend to use my trigger finger on the opposite side to release the mag, which works smoothly...

Pez:

I might consider doing that myself, but for the fact that I shoot a number of other guns regularly, all with the same or similar operation and controls (1911s; CZ; Taurus OSS; etc.), and I do not want to introduce another method of mag release to the mix. Make sense?

Well, it will either get better or it will not; life won't end, and there are always other guns to shoot!

Strangely, I have removed the block again, had the same problem of the slide not moving past the end of the frame, and then- it suddenly slid past that point normally. Don't know what happened- maybe the ejector jiggled out of place? :banghead::banghead: Sorry for the paniced post.

I find that the mag release works fine with the thumb- just very stiff.

Just got back from the range and, WOW, what a difference! The SR9 now shoots as well as my Glocks. In fact, the trigger is crisper, if anything (after the mag safety removal- ahem...). I fired 150 rounds of 115 gr through it, and a mix of defense rounds, including some GA ARMS 124gr +P+ Gold Dots. Shoots grrreat! :)

Well after waiting months like everyone else, Ruger sent me their box, and my Ruger was shipped back promptly in 12 days as promised. The new trigger is much improved, with less creep. I would not rate it as highly as my Glock G26 trigger however. I fired them both side by side to get a direct comparison. There is now less trigger travel to fire the Ruger SR9, a welcome change from its original trigger performance. I shot 50 rounds with no FTFs or FTEs. My spouse shot another 50 rounds, just as reliably. The SR9 now shoots low by about 5 inches at 25 yards and I will re-set the rear sight next time I go to the range.

I am relieved that the pistol is now back in my possession, although since I was without it for so long (the DO NOT USE warning for Ruger came months ago), I have become a huge fan of my Glock G26. That little G26 pistol with a Glock magazine of 15 rounds is preferable to me in NJ since I cannot get a 15 round magazine for the Ruger SR9.

Those 10 round magazines from Ruger seem like a waste of space and time, and I am hopefully not putting my life at risk some day due to NJ's ridiculous laws of 15 or less leaving me stuck at 10 round clips for the Ruger. :banghead:

Does anyone know of a 15 round magazine for the Ruger SR9?

Ruger SR9 recall results

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I'm looking for others impressions of the SR9 recall results.

Myself, I just got my pre-Production SR9 back from Ruger and I must say it was a very smooth trouble-free experience. It did take them a little while to get me the shipping box but no big deal, I just kept on shooting it and have always been impressed with its accuracy and reliability. Once the box arrived, off it went and was back less than two weeks later (which was very surprising to me). Free (new) mag, SR9 cap and nice Ruger sticker. Well worth the "inconvenience".

Pre-return issues:
The trigger was a small issue with excessive creep and some mild grittiness but it felt like it was improving. I was also having some issues with the barrel lug peening on the top front. Other than that, the gun was great.

Post-recall impressions:
I must say, I'm very impressed with the results. A few of the noticeable tweaks; Primarily the trigger is what I really noticed, I would have to say the trigger is about 300% better, barely any creep, no grittiness and breaks clean. They also replaced the mag release which I didn't even know there was an issue with. Most importantly to me, they replaced the barrel and after about 300rds fired, no peening what-so-ever....oh yea, I guess they did something in the safety department but I couldn't see anything different when field stripped for cleaning.

All-in-all, I would have to say I'm very impressed with the way Ruger handled the whole issue and it further instills in me not only the quality of their firearms but also their customer service and dedication to putting out a quality product for a reasonable price that the average "Joe" can still afford.

Not surprised. I AM surprised this crap doesn't happen more often with Ruger. I worked for them for a year and I was NOT impressed by any facet of that company. Shoddy business from the top down. The only good one I ever met was Ken Jorgenson.

I personally was pleased with Ruger's handling of the recall and the results of the recall effort. I liked my SR9 before the recall, and I like it much since the recall. Good gun.

I am perparing to buy a handgun looked at the sr9 till i saw the recall. It is on my list to buy but on the bottom now. Glock 21 ruger p89th. Then the berreta m9 and i will have my handgun collection.

Still some older ones out there.

I had paid little attention to the recall since I did not own an SR9. I had read that the problem was fixed, so when I saw one NIB at a pawnshop here on sale yesterday, I impulse bought it.

THEN I did some more reading, and realized it was in the early serial number range with the old style trigger. No biggy, I went to the recall website and a box is on the way. Hopefully the turnaround has sped up, I imagine the initial backlog of last year has eased up considerably.

Gives me time to locate some 9mm ammo. And a holster.

SR9 Recall

This recall, like most, was probably initiated due to some incompetent idiot who shouldn't own a firearm in the first place, dropping his or her pistol and shooting their self in the foot or some other body part.
I am "safety officer" at one of our local ranges and I can tell you from experience that many people who own firearms, shouldn't. I see them daily.
As a result our government attempts to legislate safety because it can't legislate intelligence.
Don't blame Ruger or the other manufacturers for the gun owner's stupidity. If you don't drop a loaded weapon it probably won't accidentally discharge. Hell, most reputable manufacturers put safeties on their weapons - use them!

As far as I'm concerned there should not have been a recall of this handgun. It was pure bullcrap from the outset!
