Ok so I was reading my "GUNS" magazine and they had a article about the RUGER SCOUT RIFLE, and I have to admit I'm kinda intrigued with it. This thing has allot of options for sights and also it shoots the classic .308. Looks rugged and for a bug out rifle the fact that the bolt action on the gun can't gum up and stop makes me excited. Also I have bin watching the walking dead on AMC so it got me thinking on this topic. So here is my question???
Does anyone have this rifle and if so how is it and is it worth $980.00?

Well, since zombies aren't real, that probably shouldn't figure into your purchase decision.

That said, it looks like a nice, but pricy option. Use the search function - there's been a lot said about them here.

Hornady validates the coming zombie apocalypse and its on the internet, so it must be true.

As to the price, gunblast seems to think so... For what that's worth.

Well this was supposed to be a fun topic but it kinda got buzz killed.

I love the Scout rifle concept and have been using one of my own device for about 20 years now. As I type this, the stock for the Scout rifle I'm building for my wife is drying its second coat of oil.

I'm glad Ruger threw their hat in the Scout rifle ring, but I question some of their designs:

What is the latest obssesion with 16.5" barrels?!?!? I don't get it. I know, I know, they're handier, but my gosh, save a little room for practicality! A .308 loaded with ball powder and fired from a 16.5" barrel will produce an enormous fireball not to mention muzzle blast. An 18.5" or better yet a 20" barrel would be som much better.

The magazine. I dunno...I like the concept, but it appears the mags are proprietary (read: expensive and not available just anywhere) and if you happen to lose your magazine, you have a really slow, clumsy single shot. Also, from the looks of it, it's so deep it could double as a monopod.

I really like the fact that they put sights on it, and from the looks of them, good sights.

I could almost live with everything but the short barrel.

I'm with BamAlmighty..get an FR-8 or a Spanish 1916 Mauser and be done with it.

My FR-8 before:

Yes after reading about it a little more I would have bin more happy if the ditched the 10 mag. For that size they could have used FAL mags or better yet AR-10 mags at least those are 20 rounders. For only 10 rounds that's a rather long mag. I have never owned a .308 before that's why I'm curious about the scout.

Regarding the .308, my FR-8 is really accurate considering it wears a 2.75X scope. My hunting handload groups under 1" day-in and day-out. I fired the wifes 1916 .308 a little prior to the modifications and it too looks like it's going to be a shooter, but then most .308's are.

Street price's are around $700-$750. If the scout rifle appeals to you the Ruger is probably one of the best factory versions, at lest for the money. For me 16" is just too short for the barrel and I can shoot better with a low powered scope mounted conventionally. Don't like the forward mounted scout scopes. I can live with detachable mags, but the Ruger version protrudes too far below the stock for my tastes

For my money I'd buy an All Weather 308, cut the barrel to 20" and have iron sights installed. With Ruger rings the scope can come off in seconds to use the irons and can be replaced without losing zero.

...is it worth $980.00?
No, but it's probably worth the $750 street price.

It can do everything a Springfield M1A can do.... only slower...
...and two pounds lighter.....and at half the cost.

if you're willing to live without an optic, save your money and buy a Spanish FR8
Which could be the solution to buying any new bolt action rifle.

Which would've required a redesign of the action to work with a staggered magazine. Which would've increased the price. Which would've given everybody something else to complain about.

I've had a Ruger GS Scout on the brain ever since I saw the first reviews. I need to handle one and try the action....If it is a good fit I'll likely buy one as soon as I can find it locally.

I also have to admit that I like the fact that the rifle is suppresser ready and yes it has a 16" barrel but I'm sure you could get a better flash hider then the factory one that it comes with, that one is for a .223/5.56 not .308.
My friend has a POF .308 in 16" barrel and e changed the flash hider now its not so bad.

I picked one up a few months ago. I love it. The stock ghost ring sight is fast and easy to use. Magazine takes a minute to get used to and the action is pretty smooth, I am going to try to smooth it up a little, trigger is decent, light with a little creep, i plan on replacing it with a good timney. Overal, love the rifle and i havent missed much with it :)

if you're a lefty, go for it!

If you're a righty, why? There are several options that do everything this does at half the price. I have a No4mk1 Enfield Scout with an XS scout rail...it does everything the Ruger GS does, except it also takes stripper clips and a bayonet; excluding optic, i'm into it for under $300. My FR-8, which looks just like 35W's before pic, ran me about $350, IIRC. (It also uses strippers and a bayonet! ...but no detachable mag box to dig into your back while it's slung on your shoulder.)

I'm a lefty, and have been thinking about getting a LH Ruger GS, and selling off some of my righty-bolt guns that do the same thing, some of which are mentioned above...since there aren't many Lefty options out there. However, if i were right handed, I wouldn't bother with the Ruger, since there's a lot of guns out there that do everything it does.

I like the Scout rifle concept and have read just about everything Cooper wrote about the topic. I'm glad Ruger came out with it. No one Scout rifle will ever appeal to everyone as each has their pros and cons (weight, recoil, barrel length, etc). I'm waiting to see what additional models Ruger brings out in 2012. I am also debating as to wheter to get a custom scout (for more money but I'm not so price focused on the rifle) or one of the manufacturers versions.

For now, the closest thing I have to a scout is a lever action 30-30 with back-up irons and a Leuopld IER 2.5x scope. Without a doubt it's my favorite rifle. I can't wait to see if I will like a scout rifle more than my lever action or not. The other hunting rifle I own/carry often is a 30-06 bolt action with a 4x fixed scope in the traditional location over the action. It's a good rifle as well.

The ruger will be more reliable, has customer support, a source of good magazines, and isn't in a caliber that was retired from service 60 years ago.

Mine shoots well. I like it with the 5 round aics magazine; it doesnt stick out nearly as much as the 10 rounder. It takes the same mags as my other rifles, so that is a big plus. The spacer setup is nice too, especially since I have orangutan length arms lol.

Trigger is plenty nice enough for what it is designed for. Accuracy seems good, although I have not worked up a load for it or anything. Shooting just generic 175 smk handloads I was getting just about 2470 fps, so not too slow.

Swapped the flash hider for a surefire piece so the suppressor can jump right on (I was kinda worried, but the open sights clear it fine).

Very happy with it. You probably will be too. BTW it ships with conventional ruger rings if you want a conventional scope mount AND the forward rail is easily removed if you dont want it on there.

I have one and it didn't cost me any where near $980.

I like it a lot better than my Remington 700, less finicky about ammo and the barrel doesn't need to cool for five minutes between shots to get good groups.

Very versatile caliber and the rifle can be configured conventionally or scout style.
