I found a Security-Six .357 with 6" bbl at a local gun shop. The asking price is $298. It has Pachmayer grips and locks up tight. It doesn't look like it has been shot much, but there is some carry wear on the bluing at the muzzle and trigger guard.
What is a good price for this gun? The store didn't have many used .357's around and I don't want to buy a new Taurus.

That would probably be what they'd be asking for it hereabouts, too.

Hmm. I got a 98% 2 3/4" Security-Six a year or two ago for $225, and I was pretty happy with that price. Really happy, actually.

I think your gun would be a fine buy at $250, and a reasonable buy at $275 (if you're looking for a .357). If it were me, though, just cruising the gun stores with no particular need of yet another .357, it would have to be in the $225 range to get me to buy it.

The Security-Sixes are superb revolvers, by the way. I've never seen one that's been worn out (although I understand there are guys on the Ruger Forum who've had to have theirs re-built), no matter how much it's been shot with full-house .357s. Their triggers are notso-hotso, but the price, durability and size are all right.

I hope you can get the 6" at a price that pleases you. :)

I have a stainless 6" security-six that I bought 10 years ago for $285. I keep thinking I will replace it some day with a 686 but havent yet because the Security-Six does everything I need it to do. I have seen them going for less than $298 but have seen them sell for more also. If you do decide on the Ruger you will not be unhappy.

The price is a bit high IMHO, but the revolver is certainly worth it. I have a great affinity for the Ruger "Six" series.

I would probably try to get it down to $250-$275, depending on the wear. You might also do some searches on completed auctions at www.gunbroker.com and www.auctionarms.com to get an idea of what these are selling for.

I bought a 4" Security Six about 8 years ago for $225 in excellent condition, and a 2 3/4" about 18 months ago in fair to good condition for $185.

Good luck whatever you decide.

That is a lot high around here, blued guns are typically down around $200 and stainless around $250. I just sold a stainless 6" a couple months ago for $225, and it took quite a while to sell at that price.

If I am going to spend $300 I am going to buy a Smith. I have both and the Smith is worth the extra money.

$200-$250. is about as much as I have seen them going for around here and about as much as Iwould pay for one..

just my .02 peso's

Thanks. I thought that price was a bit high. If I could find one for $225 here I would snatch it up. Maybe I'll wait and buy a GP100. But I am still looking for K-frames and such.

ANTHONY SS:

Even if you have to pay $298, the Ruger Security-Six is a far better revolver than that price would indicate! You could offer $225 and work upwards again(If necessary?)? The price really varies, depending on where you are located!

Although I have several K-frame(.357)revolvers(And, like them!)I give the "Nod" to my Security-sixes-due to their superior strength, ease of disassembly for cleaning, and the fact that they can shoot continuous .357 magnum loads(Much longer than any S&W K-frame can!)before shooting loose! The trigger is better on the(Older)S&W K-frame revolvers-but, with a Bullseye(Or, other?)spring kit(And, with some break-in, time!)the security-Six trigger can become quite good!

I own several Security-Sixes and, I have never had a bad one! They are as tough as nails, they shoot accurately, they are very reliable, and you would be very happy with one of these revolvers, I'm sure! You will also be happy with an S&W K-frame(But, if you tend to shoot continuous heavy .357 magnum loads, you'd be better off, with the stronger, Security-Six!)! It's your choice? However, there is nothing wrong with a good, Security-Six! It will outlive you, if given good care! Good luck, in making your decision? :neener:

I got a beater for $150 on Auction Arms... I reblued it myself and now it looks like it was permanently scarred in a house fire. Picked up a pair of Pachmayr grips for $16 on Ebay.

But then again, I'm really cheap.

The Security-Six is easily worth (real value, my opinion) $300. My issue with paying that much is that I can get a lightly-used GP100 for about the same price at just about any gunshow in the DFW Metroplex.

I own 3 and watch the auction sites regularly. $240 is about right for a 6" blue gun in very good condition. I don't doubt many sell for more than that but a patient buyer who is willing to wait can probably find one in stainless for well under $300 online shipped. 4" stainless guns go for low $200's every week. The only ones I see lately past $300 are NIB guns. Did you want 6" or is that just what he had in the store?
If you register at Gunbroker you can search completed auctions...a great resource.

I'd also somewhat agree with the idea that it is actually "wrth" around $300 because I think they are underpriced in the market right now. I'm always looking for new or near new models to add to my collection.

I bought my 6" stainless, a 200th year model, barely used for $140 in 1990, but that was then and this is now. My stainless fixed sight 4" DAO Service Six in .38 cost me all of $210 shipped just a month ago. My near new stainless 2 3/4" Security Six .357 was $270 shipped a few months ago.

Why would you want a GP-100 over a Security Six? I'd take the older gun, given the same condition for both. Come to think of it, that holds true for almost every gun.

The Ruger Security Sixes were a fine gun. I wish Ruger never discontinued them. The 298.00 is somewhat high. I see them for much less on gunsamerica.Adding shipping, then the transfer fee it would come out close to the 298.00 anyway. If it seems tight and the finish is acceptable I say go for it.I have some Smith K frames and a couple of the 686's. I'd keep my 6" Security Six anytime over the Smith's.I'm not saying the Smith's aren't nice,I just like the Ruger's better.

Ruger Redhawk

1)I feel exactly the same way as Ruger Redhawk, regarding the excellence of the Ruger Security- Six!

2)As far as the price, here in California, the average price for a Security Six in good condition is $350-$375(Before tax and DROS)! :banghead: :cuss:
