Ah-ha! Sounds like someone damaged it, then got rid of it.
Can you take it back to the place that sold it to you? For $380, they should at least renegotiate the price!
As someone said above, the Security-Six isn't a "target gun." But that's too often taken to mean "not accurate," and the Rugers certainly don't fall into that category. They certainly have held there own with the Model 66 S&W; however, not the 686. The 686 was designed to at least equal the Colt Python in accuracy. The first few waves certainly did that and as far as I know, they still give the Python a run for its money.
Rugers tend towards heavier bullets. That always bothered me, but a friend of mine who loves Rugers told me that it makes sense in that heavier bullets are generally more used in hunting. For self defense, lighter bullets (125 gr) are used at 25 yards or less, and Rugers can handle that just fine. Those 686s, though, are astoundingly good guns. For camping and hiking, I'd prefer the Ruger Security-Six over the 686 or the GP-100. All my "short" Security-Sixes, alas, have heavier barrels than I would like. I wish I still had a skinny barrel in 2.75-inch.
Let us know how you fare!
