ruger serial number question

just got a mini 14 on a trade and the serial number is 182-001xx
after looking it up i see that 182 started with 182-45601.
did ruger just number them randomly or am i missing something. thanks for the help.

lol..just wondering how the serial number for a year starts at fourty five thousand plus but I have one numbered in the one hundreds.

The serial numbers show are at the beginning of that year. That would but your mini 14 being made some time in 1980.

Ruger did not necessarily number their firearms in sequential order and the SN ranges are not always exactly accurate. For example I have an early P89 thats SN is well below what is shown for the series. According to the list is should be a P85. I know however from rugers records that it was originally shipped as a P89 in 1992. According to the web site P89 production did not start until 1993.
