Ruger SP101 22LR

I just got my copy of G&A and read the article. The rear sight appears adjustable for both elevation and windage. (I think the older guns are windage only, but may be wrong) It has a half lug barrel. I wish it had a full lug barrel, even though that would add a little weight. The barrel also has a very different contour compared to the older SP's.

i guess i don,t have to buy a new ruger .22 revolver,i can live with 6 shots. eastbank.

Hmm, I was hoping for a snubby length, to better act as a trainer for my .357 fiveguns. Even so, I am glad to see this.

If it sells and it will, I feel sure Ruger will bring out a shorter barrel version. It would be quite easy to do once they get rolling on manufacture.

I've got one I bought back in the 90s NIB. It doesn't get shot much because I prefer my K frame S&Ws. It is a nice gun and shoots well - guess I'll have to dig it out and take it to the range soon.

Mine is a 4" full lug barrel. They also made 4" half lug and 2" guns

I just read someone claims ruger posted on facebook that the article was a mistake and there is no plans on producing them for sale at this time...... I hope that was a mistake!

If so we will have to flood ruger with a collective groan of emails....

Don't think a publication garnering a nationwide audience would publish if it was a mistake.

I picked up a nice specimen a few months back in a trade. I look forward to taking it to the range, it's just plain fun to shoot. And, unlike many of my other pistols, this one has a home here until I move on to the big range in the sky.

Just a side note on this "mission accomplished" rap:

The media purposely misrepresented (lied about) that to smear Bush. The banner was for the SHIP'S mission being accomplished, which it was, nothing more.

Don't perpetuate the media lie.

Now, back to the thread already in progress.

I hope it does become available. Finally, I would be able to buy a Ruger .22LR revolver (rather than a Ruger .22Mag with a .22LR cylinder).

I had one and didn't like it. Sold it.

Just saying.

You may as well say why then!

I'll go out on a limb and predict it is because the DA trigger was heavy and stacky. But was yours an 8 shot or 6? ;)

This is really going to kill the market for the used ones on gunbroker. Keep an eye out for a load of them going up for sale soon, hehehe.

My personal opinion is that Ruger is in fact going to release an 8-shot SP-101 in 22LR. I highly doubt that Guns & Ammo would publish this otherwise. It will be just a matter of time as it probably isn't ready and Ruger probably wants to see public reaction.

Message to Ruger.... make the trigger as good as the GP-100 and you will have a market winner. The trigger can be a little heavy, but it needs to be smooth. The J-frame Smith M63 is your reference point.

As far as I'm concerned it is. I'm going to spend my money on something I like, not something I might be able to get made into something I like.
So every gun you bought came exactly the way you wanted? Never had to change the sights, grips, springs or anything? Wow, lucky guy! :D

Changing sights is not a big deal.

Target sites

For starters, the gun seems to be made to be a trail gun, not a target gun. A trail gun with sights that were designed for quick acqusition and not super precise.

Having said this, the article that was leaked in G&A claimed that Ruger was going to offer target sights for the gun as well. It doesn't sound like they'd necessarily be an option on the gun, but they could be purchased separately.

They got great accuracy out of the gun in tests. The average 25 yard 5 shot group was a little over two inches and the best group was 1.5". Not bad for a very packable trail gun that lacks precision sights.

This seems like a strategy by Ruger to generate hype. Too bad they're willing to be so shady about it: "not in production at this time..."

Reading between the lines, "not in production" can mean "not YET in production." Ditto for "at this time." They're just weasel words. Maybe they have someone monitoring the hype to decide how many to make?

I agree with 22-rimfire in that Guns & Ammo wouldn't have written an article on it if it weren't going to be made. Otherwise, Ruger is pretty much accusing them of having their own version of the SP-101 made, then claiming Ruger will produce it. That'd be pretty risky, I think. They'd stand to lose a lot of credibility.

Lastly, is there any way to confirm that user "Ruger" on facebook actually represents the Ruger gun company, and not just some anonymous twerp?

Mmm, well, my Rossi will do that and it's several ounces lighter. It'll shoot honest to goodness 1" groups at 25 with RWS target, but 2" with about any kind of bulk ammo. I carry it as a trail/kit gun on occasion and it's a range plinker. It ain't broke. I'd love the Ruger, but I think I can spend my money on something that would improve my collection, maybe. :D Getting hard to do, though, at this point, but a 3" .357 SP101 would be nice. :D I don't have one of those, either.

So on another forum, someone posted that Ruger's Facebook page now states it will start shipping August 1st!!!

Money is already set aside.

I don't care what they naysayers say---that's a fine lookin gun. I originally wanted a 3", but I'm liking this 4" a lot.

Generating hype...

I don't think that this was intended to generate hype.

The article said that the SP101 in .22lr has been Ruger's #1 requested firearm since it was initially discountinued. There are a lot of folks that have wanted one or more of these guns.

I think that G&A released this story several months early, and I think that Ruger is genuinely pissed off. They just released the Single-10. Releasing the SP101 a few weeks later would have an impact on Single-10 sales.

I was ready to make the Single-10 my next purchase. Do I like SA revolvers? Not that much, but it seemed like a pretty decent, higher capacity stainless revolver. I had a single six hunter and sold it earlier this year. The fact that it was a dedicated .22 lr and it had a 10 shot capacity was enough for me to overlook that it is a SA revolver. I would have been happy to settle on a Single-10.

I like the Single-10, and still might eventually get one, but now that I know that the SP101 will be released in the future, I'll wait for the SP101. I think that a lot of folks are like minded. I think that Ruger knows this and is really pissed off, right now.
