Got a brand new Ruger SP101 357mag 3-1/16" bbl
A closer inspection at the forcing cone revealed two small notches at the forcing cone, at 3 and 9 o'clock position. Both extruding to the right. See the attached picture.

I compared mine to the forcing cone picture at this link

That one does not have these notches.

Is it a problem? machine marks?

Another picture where you can see the two notches at the forcing cone. They don't extend into the forcing cone.

My NIB 2.25" sp101 made it all the way to my house before I noticed that the riflings were rough. Had I inspected the bore with the light that was in my pocket.....I never would have brought that gun home. My mistake. The gun does shoot pretty well despite the fact that the riflings look like they have been cut with a hammer and chisel.
I should have sent that gun back immediately, but I wanted to shoot it. It shot well enough to keep.....but I wonder how well it would do with a nice clean bore!!
My advice to you is to send it back. Then you will know what you have. I am confident Ruger will make it right.

I just spent 5 hrs polishing the gun with mothers mag and aluminum polish. A lot of elbow grease. really hate to send it back now. I will see how it shoots then decide what to do with it. Thanks!

I'd also send it back. I had a customer service issue with a Ruger once and when that gun came back... WOW!
It's very smooth and utterly perfect in every respect now. I can't imagine you being disappointed by Ruger on something like this.

I have recut forcing cones on a bunch of guns. Many have been much worse than this one, but this one looks like a very good candidate. I like the 5 degree cutter from Brownell’s. I feel the 11 degree cutter is way too steep. The 5 degree is a little shallow, but works well for me. If someone made a 7 degree cutter I would probably use it. Recut it, then polish it. Not a problem.

Looks like a burr.

That's a tough one that only you can decide. It does make for a long 3-4 weeks but they do come back very nice.

I can't imagine Ruger would say "that looks ok."

After some thought, I think I would send it in.
