My LGS has the Ruger SR1911 Commander 4.25 inch barrel, in 45 ACP (what else?) never owned one before always had the full size. I will put since reloading is out for now perhaps 50-100 rounds per year thru it. I have a good Tisa now, full sized but wanted to upgrade. Suggestions?

They want just under $900 for it new..

For the money they are decent. Which Tisa do you have what makes the Ruger an upgrade?

Ruger makes a nice 1911, and their factory support is excellent should you ever need anything. Mine keeps up with my Colt Combat Commander just fine as backup EDC.

I don't know if you were needing the equity in the Tisas to acquire the Ruger, but I have bought several firearms from these guys and they usually have pretty good pricing. If this is the same Ruger they have it for $820. Maybe you LGS will price match to keep the sale?

They have a lightweight version for $915.

I had one of these Ruger .45 4.25" 1911 models.
It wasn't for me, although when I sold it I had 11,800 rounds through it. I think I owned it for ~a year.
For me, things were breaking: two front sights (2 trips for the slide back to Ruger); a slide-stop; an adjustable rear sight broke as the stock fixed sights weren't regulated well for the stock 230gr. fmj I was shooting (various brands); I did like how the plunger tube was integral with the frame; I really liked how it carried; I wasn't happy with its accuracy (or lack of such).

I really wanted to like it and gave it a gun chance but in the end, I sold it off and will just stay with my four 5" 1911s. This Ruger was a replacement for a couple of Colt Commanders I had which had other problems:(

For a gun which will only experience maybe 100 rounds/year, it'll probably be ok.

My Tisas Carry (Commander size).

$466.11

That leaves a fair amount to buy ammo. Forged frame, slide, barrel, upgraded sights, trigger, hammer, duck tail. There is also an all stainless version for about $580.

My Carry came with a super smooth and clean breaking 3lb 9oz trigger with a very short reset as well as two 8 round magazines.

I've never put 11,000 rounds thru any gun in a year, I'd expect some wear and tear. Tisa is fine, zero wrong but I like stainless and Ruger :)

Which Tisas? IMHO the Ruger is not a step up unless your Tisas is a GI model. The Tisas is a forged frame, barrel and slide. The Ruger is Cast Cast Cast. If they could figure out how to cast the barrel they would. What doesn't your Tisas do that you think the Ruger will? Most 1911s under $1000 are built to meet a price point. The cut corners which depending on your use might or might not ever matter.

I picked up this one a few months ago- it is my first Commander and favorite 1911 to date. Its a better shooter than my '67 Colt Commercial, is well balanced, has a very good factory trigger and has been 100% reliable.

Although Ive only put a couple hundred rounds through it so far, it was a retired rental gun with many years of service at a local range and looked like it had never had so much as a wipedown when I got it. Nasty! After a thorough clean and lube, it runs like a champ and is tight as a drum- no rattle at all when shaken, even with the magazine out.

My only small issue was loose grip screws and bushings, but a few drops of Loctite fixed that.

I have shot my buddies Tisas, which was perfectly fine- but I would definitely consider the Ruger an upgrade. Is it worth twice the price?..... I would say yes.

My 4.25” SR1911 has been a great gun, in my hands the Ruger is more accurate than my SA Loaded 5” .45.

The only issue I had with mine was a 5.0 lb trigger pull. Ok for a duty Glock but not what I want on a 1911. I bought the Cylinder & Slide kit on sale from Brownells and dropped it in. Now its a crisp 3.5 lbs.

It isn’t a higher-end 1911 .45, and certainly no where near as crisp and tight as a custom job, but it is a great shooting gun bought at a decent price in my hands. :)

Stay safe.

I had a Ruger 45 Commander for awhile, didn't bond with it, sold it. I did bond with the Ruger LW SR1911 9mm Commander tho. For a bit less money and just as much gun I got the Springfield Armory Ronin 45 Commander. For me it's a better gun than the Ruger.

FYI If you know someone selling a SR ( prefer in Iowa,) shoot me a PM. I am still looking around here and may get that new one IF I can't buy a minty used one.

I installed the same kit in my SR1911 (5") with the same results. The kit performs as advertised.

OP still has not answered the simple question. How and in what way does the Ruger constitute an upgrade in their mind. What do they think they are getting by upgrading? Only once we know that can we offer an opinion is it worth it.

I had a few years ago another Ruger SR1911 5 inch and I loved it but traded for another gun. Regrets. I purchased the Tisas because in the middle of the plague that's all I could find and it was impressive quality for the price. Now the Blue Sky prices have dropped and more choices on the market. I am a sucker for a 1911 and first owned one at age 19, many many years ago!

I think the main upgrade would be American made and factory support (hard to beat Ruger there).

I bought a p89 private sale that broke in disassembly. Ruger wasn't able to fix it so offered a variety of discount choices. I went with the cmd 1911 for four hundred something.

It didn't stick around long for me. Accuracy and recoil characteristics didn't work for me. It was a handy size but the full size was a big improvement. Good looking gun though.

I think Tisas are made in turkey. Im not familiar with the process should you have an issue. I learned on this thread tisas are forged slide and frame apparently. That is pretty nice especially at their price point. However, nothing wrong with cast done right and nobody does it better than Ruger. I think about the gp100, an absolute cast tank.

Ruger has used Cast stainless forever, and I have owned a bunch of them. Never heard of a failure from the casting process. Its not cast iron or die cast zinc and Ruger refined its process years ago.

One of the things I like about my Tisas is that they are near 100% just Series 70 clones so pieces parts should be readily available at least throughout my lifetime. The areas where there are differences are like the enlarged ejection port or the slightly wider hammer and so not a feature that might keep the gun from functioning.

Very true, a gi spec 1911 should be easy enough to work on and replace parts if needed. Factory support might not really be a concern.

I ended up getting a brand new in the box (case) from a LGS who I have done business with before. Yes its a Commander model and they took my mint condition Tisas in on trade and gave me a excellent deal. Thanks for all who replied to my post!

No, he's not required to answer that question to get help. He wants something different, if it upsets you that he won't answer your interrogation, move along. I believe he just wants one, let it go. And the comments about casting are outdated. Browning hipowers with cast frames are much stronger than the forged steel ones. Casting is fine if the process used is a good one, and Ruger does a great job at it
