Just inquired whether a private seller was interested in a trade for my like new SR9C, with 4 mags and ammo, for a like new Rock Island 1911.

He preceded to tell me mine was a $150 gun so I'd have to add a lot of cash. When I repeated the brand and model and cited my purchase price and the lowest online sale price, he acted like I was trying to rip him off and said he worked in a gun shop so knew the retail price -- which apparently is like a good deal on a Hi-Point C9.

I got off the phone a little flabbergasted but thinking maybe I should check that store's prices.

Any trade offers or counter offers that left you scratching your head?

I was once offered a 10/22 takedown for a AR AND a 629. Not t the takedown for both, but on different sites on posts where either gun was up for sale. Either the guy was an idiot, a shyster, or really wanted to unload that 10/22

That was you!

Just kidding.

Some guy offered me a used ruger hangun (don't remember exactly) and $50 for my P220 elite. Anyways I didn't take the offer and ended up getting the $450 I asked for it somewhere else.

I thought $450 was downright theft, but being offered the ruger and $50 left a palm print in my face.

When ARs were scarce I think a lot of 10/22s were sold with 25-round mags. And then there was the .22 shortage.

I've been offered several 10/22s as uneven trades this year. While they have generally offered cash as well, they wanted to keep their scare-level value.

Gosh, I've had so many "you're not serious are you?" sort of offers over the years it is tough to single one out.

Possibly the best was a guy that offered me a beat to pieces AK, back in the day when kits were cheap and guys were pressing them out in their garage, for a Vietnam era Randall. He knew what the Randall was and what it was worth, but must have assumed I was an idiot or complete AK newb or honestly believed his Rom-ACK was as good as my Arsenal.

Sounds like you made a fair offer. Hes probably either not a fan of ruger/9mm/smaller semi autos. A simple sorry not interested would have been appropriate or even asking for a little cash. $150 is an insult.

See a lot of ridiculous prices on the local armslist here, mostly people over valuing hi points and other cheapos. Or offering $100 for a $200-300 gun.

I was at one time very into trading. Like I was making 3-4 trades a week. I had all kind of offers.

I had one guy offer me two goats for a Ruger M77.... Seriously.

One guy offered me a log splitter for a Glock. Not too bad actually, although my rule is a gun for a gun when I have a gun listed.

Another guy offered me a canoe for a rifle.

When AR's were scarce I had a bushmaster up for sale/trade and I got offered a pick-up truck for it.

I've traded some high end scopes for guns before, also things like game systems, and iPads for rifles/handguns before.

Sounds like Armslist. I list stuff on there once in a while, and will have 10 people like that for every serious one. People will offer you half of wholesale, or want to trade for i-phones, car parts, and aluminum cans.

That reminds me of the guy who offered me a vintage coca-cola bottle set for a Ruger P95.

There is a trade offer section in the area online gun classifieds, so plenty of interesting non-firearms offers. That makes sense. If someone is interested they can call. But to call up and offer somebody a children's dvd collection for a Glock (hearsay) is, I guess, admirable optimism.

I don't know if he was serious, but a guy offered me a night with his wife for an AR I was selling a year or so ago.

I would have thought he was joking - if he hadn't included pictures.

Here's an email I recently received from a guy regarding a straight trade for my $1500 dirtbike. I found out through pics it was a well used, rattle canned first gen Wasr 10:
Its a Romanian model, its 7.62x39mm bullets, it has tactical conversion, forward handle, optical sight, three bannana clips, and a 75rnd drum clip. Its semi auto but if you know what bump fire is it can unload a 75rnd clip in 9sec got a ammo can I could throw in too.

UTG rail, $5 red dot/laser/waffle iron all in one sight/$10 fore grip. Dem banana clips yo. He didnt even spell banana right..... All its missing is the thing that goes up.

I declined. Its one thing to make a fair offer, its another to be insulting. Insult me and I wont sell it to you, even at full price.

Had lots of those when I worked in the gun shop. What always amused me was when a guy would come in with something in a case, tell us we should buy it, that he knew what it was worth so don't even get your book out. I'd usually tell him not to even take it out if I couldn't do an appraisal and research it.

I listed a mint Ruger 44 Carbine on THR for $700...guy offered me 900 rounds of 9mm as a straight trade and seemed insulted when I pointed out the approximate $270 value of his trade offer.

It's not that he low balled you he just over valued his gun, common with 1911 fanboys.

I don't know how many times I list "I am not interested in trades" and people send pics of there $300 S*W Sigma or there Gen 2 beat to hell Glock and call it a $600 gun... my favorite is when they want to trade random garbage. I had a guy take a picute of a jetskit without a motor laying on the ground in the woods with a crack down the side. He called it "needs some repairs" or a guy who offered slabs of granite. I asked him "what do you mean?" AND he literally sent pics fo 5 or 6 probably about 2'X2' slabs of different granite. *** am I going to do with that?

People always thing there guns are worht what they paid for it...even if they paid 500% higher than what everyone paid for it.

I love the tactical WASR 10's with the tapco forearm and rails, the $12 bipod and a 40 rd clip that they call "custom tactical AK" and ask $1200 for.

TACTICAL and CUSTOM are two words thrown around WAY to much in the firearms world.

All the gun groups I post on FB

I think another nuance of trading/selling is you have the people who want to sell/trade and those who need to sell. Everyone is looking for the guy who needs to sell, because they gotta get rid of it fast to say pay for bills or what have you. If you are wanting to trade chances are it's closer to the want than the need. Most people I encounter and from what I hear in stories is that they don't know the difference, and hence they treat your trade like they are doing you a favor.

Funnily enough I just had someone offer a Jiminez JA380 for my good condition XD45 with 3 magazines. Felt like I needed a shower.

One of my biggest pet peeves is when someone wants, say $400 for a handgun, then says "$550 trade". Why on earth do people want more for their stuff on a trade? The guns worth the same amount whether your trading or not. :scrutiny:

Hmmm.... I'd say $150 for a SR9c qualifies as low balling.

Ok I'm seeing new for $379. so 50% of is $189. maybe $190. would be fair then.

Is this the 1911? if so 50% of $471. is $236.00

Seems close to even trade to me.

Since when does a like new condition, quality name brand firearm with extra magazines bring only 50% of the lowest retail price you can find? If we were talking about an interaction with a LGS that may be accurate, but the OP stated that he was dealing with a private individual.

If you have any like new Ruger, S&W, Glock, etc handguns for sale at 50% of Bud's Gun Shop price I would be interested.
